Meet the ’32 Ford with a Toyota turbo engine

0
Goodguys Toyota Hot Rod

Since the 1970s, a 350-cubic inch Chevrolet V-8 has become the default engine of choice for hot rod builders.

One 1932 Ford at the recent Goodguys Racedeck Salt Lake Nationals, however, proved that there is still plenty of room for variety.

We have taken a closer look at this intriguing creation, powered by a turbocharged Toyota 2JZ engine.

A Japanese powerhouse

Goodguys Toyota Hot Rod

The 2JZ family of Toyota engines has been found in a wide array of vehicles made by the Japanese manufacturer. First launched in 1991, the 3.0-liter inline-six debuted in the Lexus GS and Toyota Soarer.

However, the twin-turbocharged 2JZ-GTE version is perhaps the most famous, due to its use in the fourth-generation Toyota Supra

In standard form, it endowed the Supra with up to 325 horsepower, plus 333 lb-ft of torque. Modified versions are known to produce much more with relative ease.

Taken with a pinch of salt

Goodguys Toyota Hot Rod

For JD Youngblood, the proprietor of Youngblood’s Hot Rods, the Toyota 2JZ engine offered the chance to build a special car. His inspiration came from the vehicles used for speed trials on salt lakes.

Youngblood had previously used Mazda rotary engines to compete in the sub-1.5-liter class. However, the rules were changed meaning that rotary engine displacement had to be multiplied by two, such was their potency on the salt.

With experience in building Japanese-powered ‘32 Ford hot rods, Youngblood was happy to experiment with a new engine.

Disrupting the hot rod scene

Goodguys Toyota Hot Rod

With friends involved in the Japanese car world, including Toyota Supra fans, the 2GZ engine seemed a perfect choice for Youngblood.

The Utah-based car builder also hoped that the Supra motor would encourage younger generations to become interested in the hot rodding.

Youngblood described the car as being a “disruptor” in the hot rod community, with mixed reactions from seasoned hot rodders. However, he notes that the scene has changed to become more diverse in the past decade.

Big power, big speed

Goodguys Toyota Hot Rod

Where no one can take issue with Youngblood’s Toyota-powered ’32 Ford is when it comes to the performance on offer.

The 3.0-liter engine is fitted with a Garrett GTX45 turbocharger, typically producing 22 lb of boost for running on the salt flats.

At this boost level, the engine has 750 to 800 horsepower. But, cranking the dial to 40 lb sees this swell to 1,300 horsepower!

All of this tuning allowed the 2JZ-engined car to set a record of 208.265 mph on the salt flats.

Back to the show circuit

Goodguys Toyota Hot Rod

Youngblood’s Toyota-powered ‘32 Ford was just one of the highlights at the Goodguys 2nd RaceDeck Salt Lake Nationals.

The Goodguys show scene is back to a full calendar in 2021. The next major event on the circuit is in Des Moines, IA.

Set to be held from July 2-4, the 30th Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals takes place at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Following this, the 23rd Summit Racing Nationals are scheduled for July 9-11, at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, OH.

Motorhome stopovers coming to Scotland this summer

The Highland Council in Scotland has relaxed licencing regulations to allow landowners to create motorhome stopover sites this summer.

The organisation is hopeful a network of sites – called Àirighs, the Gaelic word for ‘shieling’, which is a rough shelter traditionally used by shepherds while tending flocks on summer pastures – could be set up to offer basic services, such as waste disposal, and boost the number of resting areas in the region.

The demand for travelling in motorhomes has ‘intensified’ during the pandemic and created significant pressures for safe overnight parking in rural communities.

Volkswagen California

The idea is based on continental Europe’s long-established Aires network. Many of the motorhome sites are provided free of charge, while others can be used for a small fee.

“Aires are used all over Europe and Àirighs could offer an opportunity to assist the economic recovery in Highlands,” said councillor Gordon Adam, the chair of the council’s tourism committee.

Alan Henderson, chair of the council’s communities committee, added: “Dedicated motorhome parking areas are provided in many European countries and these bring welcome tourists into well-known and undiscovered areas alike. Aires make suitable night stops all year round. The Highland ‘Àirigh’ symbolises the freedom of motorhoming and reflects the way people are choosing to holiday.

Volkswagen California

“This approach is necessary in the Highlands to allow us to adapt to the increased popularity of this type of travel and to mitigate the problems experienced in many communities from overnight parking in unsuitable places and congestion caused in beauty spots.”

According to the council, the temporary relaxation in planning laws will remain in place until 31 December, or until the need to socially distance has been removed.

Petrol prices rise for 7th month in a row

0
Fuel prices

May marked the seventh consecutive month of petrol price rises, new data reveals.

According to the RAC, the average cost of a litre of unleaded petrol went up by 2.24p during the month to 129.27p. The price of diesel fuel also increased by 1.95p to 131.59p. In the seven months since November 2020 – the last time fuel costs fell – the price of petrol has increased by 15.5p.

The RAC says petrol is also 22p a litre more expensive than in May 2020 – the largest 12-monthly increase in 11 years.

Filling a full 55-litre tank for a family car will cost £71.10 for petrol and £72.37 for diesel – around £8 more than before the rises began in November – the RAC added.

“After a weekend which saw millions of cars take to the roads to enjoy a sunny Bank Holiday and a half-term away from home, the price of filling up with petrol has unfortunately reached its highest point in just shy of two years,” said RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams.

“After seven consecutive months of rising prices, drivers will be wondering if the increases are ever going to end. We’ve now witnessed the biggest petrol price rise in any 12-month period since May 2010, when unleaded rocketed from 99p a year earlier to 121p.”

RAC calls on retailers to cut prices

Fuel prices

Williams added: “Looking at the wholesale price of both fuels, in normal circumstances unleaded definitely shouldn’t be continuing to rise with the numbers actually pointing to the potential for a 2p reduction. And diesel is currently 4p too expensive, which suggests retailers are using the saving in the wholesale price to help make up for lower fuel sales over the last year.

“We urge retailers not to take advantage of drivers and fairly reflect what’s happening with wholesale prices on the country’s forecourts.”

David Beckham invests in EV company Lunaz

David Beckham Lunaz Investment

David Beckham, the former professional footballer turned entrepreneur, has taken a major share in an electric vehicle company.

His 10 percent stake in Silverstone-based Lunaz adds to his roster of investments, which includes the Inter Miami CF Major League Soccer team.

With other leading investors now onboard, such as the Barclay brothers, Lunaz plans to create 500 skilled jobs by 2024.

Electric classics to continue

David Beckham Lunaz Investment

Founded in 2018 by David Lorenz and Jon Hilton, Lunaz has risen to prominence through its EV conversions of classic cars. The company’s most high-profile works have seen the Range Rover Classic, and Rolls-Royce Phantom V, fitted with battery powertrains.

This ‘upcycling’ approach is central to the Lunaz business model. Instead of developing new EVs from scratch, the firm is creating a range of electric conversions for existing vehicles.

With a newly expanded 44,000 square foot facility, Lunaz will focus on three specific EV areas.

Electric classic car conversions will continue as part of Lunaz Design, with Lunaz Powertrains creating modular EV tech for other manufacturers.

Heavy duty battery technology

David Beckham Lunaz Investment

The most ambitious part of the three-pronged strategy is Lunaz Applied Technologies.

Responsible for converting industrial vehicles to electric power, this division will see fire engines, refuse trucks, and other HGVs electrified.

Lunaz hopes that its approach will see fleet companies consider upcycling existing vehicles, rather than investing in brand-new models.

It claims local authorities could save 43 percent on the total cost of ownership by converting a refuse truck to electric power.

Spend it like Beckham

David Beckham Lunaz Investment

Some 100 new jobs are set to be created by Lunaz in 2021. A UK base said to be perfectly positioned for major EV markets.

Co-founder, David Lorenz, commented: “Our commitment to Silverstone affirms the United Kingdom’s status as a leader in the development of clean-air automotive technologies. Firms like ours, which operate in the principles of the circular economy, show that British industry can provide potent answers to the global need to transition to less impactful industrial practices.”

Following his investment, David Beckham said: “Lunaz represents the very best of British ingenuity in both technology and design. I was drawn to the company through their work restoring some of the most beautiful classic cars through upcycling and electrification.”

The former Manchester United star added: “David Lorenz and his team of world-class engineers are building something very special and I look forward to being part of their growth.”

New EV cost calculator shows electric car savings

0

A tool has been developed in order to compare the lifetime costs of electric vehicles with petrol and diesel equivalents.

According to Halfords, which has developed the tool, EVs are on average almost 50 percent more expensive to buy than a comparable ICE model.

However, after three years and 30,000 miles, the average EV driver will actually end up saving £100 overall.

The Halfords calculator currently compares data for more than 100 electric, petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles.

Cost comparisons vary depending on length of ownership and annual mileage; in some cases, electric vehicles are more expensive on a total cost basis, though fuel costs and other savings will ‘at worst, substantially narrow the gap’, the company said.

As an example, Halfords showed that a Mini Cooper Electric Level 3 costs £25,500 to buy, which is a hefty £9,855 more than its petrol equivalent – the Mini Cooper Classic.

However, after three years of ownership, the electric Mini Cooper will have saved the owner so much money in fuel and other costs, they’re actually almost £800 better off.

“Intuitively we know that electric vehicles can be better value than their nearest petrol and diesel equivalents, but we wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to see it for themselves,” said Andy Turbefield, head of quality of Halfords.

“We’re not suggesting that people should buy electric because of the long-term savings, but if people are delaying purchase because of the up-front cost, this should give them pause for thought.”

Lockdown ease sees insurance claims rise 30%

Road traffic accident

The easing of lockdown has led to a surge in motorists being involved in collisions.

According to insurance company LV, it received 30 percent more claims last month compared to the start of 2021 when lockdown restrictions were reintroduced.

In early April, rival insurer NFU Mutual predicted 12 million people would hit the roads with the easing of lockdown and itself predicted the number of accidents would increase by 18 percent.

LV said since lockdown restrictions were eased in mid-April, the number of vehicles on the roads has ‘risen exponentially’.

Accidents in car parks and on motorways are seeing particular growth.

The number of car parking accidents is nearly double the rate seen in January this year and higher than any month in 2019, apart from August.

Drivers assess car accident

“In the last few weeks, we’ve seen horrendous weather, more cars on the road and people getting used to driving again, and those three factors have clearly led to more accidents,” said Martin Milliner, claims director at LV.

“Some people are getting back behind the wheel consistently for the first time in a while, so it’s really important drivers take their time getting used to the busier roads and don’t rush when parking or doing complex manoeuvres.

“It’s also worth giving your car the once over if it’s been sat on the street or drive for a period of time, just to make sure everything’s working as it should do.”

BMW i4

BMW has issued more details about its Tesla Model 3-rivalling i4 pure electric saloon ahead of its arrival in the UK in November.

Priced from £51,905, it has a range of up to 367 miles under the WLTP testing regime – an impressive figure that ranks it ahead of the Tesla Model 3.

The i4 will initially be available in two guises; the entry-level i4 eDrive 40 is powered by a 340hp electric motor, while the range-topping i4 M50 version consists of a 544hp all-wheel drive model.

The M50 has a slightly lower range of 316 miles and is priced from £63,995.

BMW i4

This version – pictured here – also carries BMW M Performance styling features outside and in.

BMW says the inclusion of its Combined Charging Unit allows use of DC high-power charging stations with an output of up to 200kW.

It estimates 102 miles (entry-level) and 87 miles (range-topping) of range can be delivered within a 10-minute charging stop at stations of this kind.

The battery, meanwhile, comprises a floor-mounted 80.7kwh lithium-ion pack, which is said to be 30 percent denser than the battery in today’s i3 EV.

BMW i4

Standard kit includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a digital cockpit display, a reversing camera, a parking assistant feature, automatic air conditioning, ambient lighting, LED lights front and back and acoustic protection for pedestrians.

The i4 EV is similar size to the firm’s 3-series saloon and shares underpinnings with the popular model. BMW added that customers in the UK will also receive a 12 subscription to the BP Pulse and Ionity networks when they take on the car.

Boy George and Waze

To celebrate Pride month, sat nav app Waze has teamed up with Boy George to create a bespoke theme.

The new Boy George theme includes voice directions from the Culture Club star – with “words of wisdom” thrown in – plus a curated Boy George playlist.

Users can even choose bespoke Boy George ‘Car-ma Chameleon’ or ‘Goldsmobile’ car icons.

The sat nav directions are not any old voice guidance alerts. Rather, they take the form of Boy George “sitting down to a nice cup of tea and a chat”.

Not only will users be told where to turn and receive alerts of hazards ahead, they’ll also enjoy words of wisdom, such as a reminder that “life is about learning to be yourself”.

Wazers can even choose their mood when they set the sat nav directions.

Utilising the Waze integration with Spotify, the Boy George Pride playlist features tracks selected to “celebrate acceptance, freedom of expression, and love”.

As they listen, users are advised to follow Boy George’s golden rule: “Listen to the music you live; passion always eclipses what’s fashionable.”

‘Majority’ of Bentley Bentayga Hybrid journeys are in EV mode

0
Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

Bentley has opened ordering for the revised Bentayga Hybrid – and revealed usage data that shows owners of the existing model are already driving most of their journeys in pure electric mode.

The plug-in hybrid SUV, which has an EV range of 25 miles, is generally used by owners daily, with half of them regularly undertaking journeys of less than 30 miles.

Nearly every customer makes use of EV mode, charging their Bentayga at home and only occasionally using the petrol engine on a day-to-day basis.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

For when they need to go further afield, the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine combines with the 17.3kWh battery to deliver a combined range of 430 miles.

It also has a suitably Bentley-like total power of 443hp and 516lb ft of pulling power. 0-62mph takes 5.2 seconds.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

The revised Bentayga Hybrid carries over the styling enhancements of the core range, and gains the same significant tech boost inside. Bentley continues to offer it in five-seat or more indulgent four-seat configuration.

Part of Bentley’s drive to have an electrified version of every model in its range by 2025, the firm has priced the Bentayga Hybrid at £155,500 – exactly the same as the Bentayga V8.

  • Lease a new Bentley Bentayga

This “focuses the customer choice on powertrain preference rather than cost”.

Ordering is open now with first deliveries due later in June.

It’s not the only Bentley hybrid that’s set to launch in 2021, either: the next is “due to break cover this summer” and more details will be following soon.

Jess Hawkins returns to the BTCC grid

Jess Hawkins BTCC 2021

The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) is set to gain an additional female driver at the Snetterton round in June.

Jess Hawkins, the W Series racing driver and Guinness World Record holder, will take the Motorbase seat of Andy Neate.

It marks the second BTCC stint for Hawkins, who drove for the Power Maxed Racing team at the Norfolk track in 2020.

A second shot at success

Jess Hawkins BTCC 2021

Hawkins described her BTCC debut in 2020 as being a “dream fulfilled”, having come close before to competing in the touring car series. As a mid-season entrant to the championship, Jess had to contend with maximum success ballast being added to her car.

Despite this, she still returned respectable results at Snetterton, moving up the standings for each of the three races.

Having won numerous karting competitions when younger, Hawkins came second in the Pro class of the 2017 Mini Challenge UK.

Her stunt driving has seen her work on the James Bond film, No Time to Die. She has also set the Guinness World Record for driving the fastest-accelerating lawnmower.

Heading back to Norfolk

Jess Hawkins BTCC 2021

The second chance for Hawkins comes as regular Motorbase driver Andy Neate has “personally taken the decision to take a short sabbatical from the BTCC at Snetterton.”

Neate was involved in a dramatic first corner crash in the second of the season-opening rounds at Thruxton. He was penalised for causing the incident, which removed Jade Edwards and Glynn Geddie from the race.

The stewards found that Neate drove in “a manner incompatible with general safety or departing from the standard of a reasonably competent driver”. This saw him fined £2,000, and given three penalty points on his racing licence.

Hawkins was surprised to receive the call from Motorbase. But, she commented that she was: “extremely excited to be making a return to the BTCC at Snetterton after my debut there in 2020.”

The Snetterton rounds of the 2021 British Touring Car Championship will take place on Sunday, 13 June.
