Best-selling car brands 2019

The proposed merger of Fiat Chrysler (FCA) and Renault would create an automotive powerhouse, as two giants of the motoring world join forces to take on the likes of Volkswagen, Toyota and General Motors. The new company would be a “world leader in the rapidly changing automotive industry with a strong position in transforming technologies, including electrification and autonomous driving”, said FCA in a statement. Using data supplied by Focus2move, we can reveal the best-selling car brands of the year so far. All figures are for the first four months of 2019.

21. Dongfeng Motor

Best-selling car brands 2019

Dongfeng Motor is having a terrible year, slipping from 17th overall in 2018 to 21st so far in 2019. Year-to-date sales are down 44.1 percent to 223,439, but it has just announced sales of 13,549 in May, which is slightly up on May 2018.

19. SAIC Motor

Best-selling car brands 2019

SAIC will be best known to UK consumers for its ownership of MG and Roewe. MG unveiled its first fully electric car at the London Motor Show, with the ZS EV hitting the streets later this year. MG has sold 272,747 cars in 2019.

18. Tata

Best-selling car brands 2019

17. Great Wall

Best-selling car brands 2019

UK consumers might recognise the Great Wall name from the budget-driven Steed pick-up, but the Chinese company is a big player on the world stage. Indeed, Great Wall is China’s largest SUV and pick-up manufacturer, with year-to-date sales of 310,833.

16. Subaru

Best-selling car brands 2019

Subaru occupies a small niche in the UK, but with sales of 316,783, it’s ranked number 16 in the world. The company is hugely successful in the US, where the number of vehicles in operation has more than doubled in the past six years. Subaru reckons it will have around five million cars on US roads by 2024.

15. Changan

Best-selling car brands 2019

The Chinese state-owned Changan Automobile Group sells cars under the Changan brand and operates joint ventures with Ford, PSA, Mazda and Suzuki. It has sold 394,245 cars in 2019, but was recently forced to recall 19,070 Changan Ford Escorts due to a risk of fire in defective starter motors.

14. Mazda

Best-selling car brands 2019

We’re getting into the big numbers now, with Mazda the last company on the list to record sales of sub 500,000 so far in 2019. The Japanese firm has shifted 484,335, which is 11.7 percent down on the same period in 2018.

13. Geely Group

Best-selling car brands 2019

We recently ran a feature on Geely as it’s probably the biggest automotive brand you haven’t heard of. The Chinese giant – which owns the likes of Volvo, Lotus, Polestar and Proton – has sold 711,150 vehicles in 2019.

12. BMW

Best-selling car brands 2019

With year-to-date sales of 827,050, BMW enjoys a global market share of three percent. This puts it just behind its primary German rival…

11. Daimler

Best-selling car brands 2019

Dieter Zetsche has stepped down from his role of CEO of Daimler AG, with Ola Kaellenius taking the reins. The new CEO said he will cut development costs of new Mercedes cars by a significant amount and will forge new alliances to improve margins. Sales are down 3.9 percent to 848,252.

10. Suzuki

Best-selling car brands 2019

Suzuki Corporation sales are down seven percent to 862,400, with the company losing ground in India and Pakistan. On the plus side, sales are up 30 percent in Mexico.

8. FCA Group

Best-selling car brands 2019

From a portfolio perspective the FCA Group is huge, featuring the likes of Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Alfa Romeo. But 2019 sales are down 6.8 percent to 1,406,670, which means the Renault merger could provide a much needed shot in the arm.

7. Honda Motor

Best-selling car brands 2019

4. General Motors

Best-selling car brands 2019

General Motors has seen a woeful 14.8 percent decline in sales in 2019, but with Hyundai failing to capitalise, the American giant retains its fourth spot. GM, which has sold 2,463,971 cars so far, is struggling in China, Canada and Mexico, but performing better in Brazil and South Korea.

3. Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi-Alliance

Best-selling car brands 2019

If this company joins forces with FCA, the combined sales will put it at the top of the global sales chart. For now, it must settle for third, with sales down 6.9 percent to 2,992,471. It’s doing well in the U.S. and Spain, but sales are down in China and Mexico.

2. Toyota Motor Corporation

Best-selling car brands 2019

The Toyota Motor Corporation, which also includes Lexus and Daihatsu, has sold 3,115,343 cars in 2019, an increase of 1.2 percent. Focus2move says the growth is being driven by strong sales in China, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

1. Volkswagen Group

Best-selling car brands 2019

No prizes for guessing the company at the top of the tree, with the mighty Volkswagen Group shifting 3,296,440 cars in 2019. But it’s not all good news, mind, and with sales down seven percent, there’s nothing to say Toyota won’t overtake VW at some point in 2019. There’s also the FCA and Renault merger to consider…

All figures provided by Focus2move are correct at the time of writing.

New electric Vauxhall Corsa-e now available to order

0

Corsa-e opens for ordering

The all-electric version of the new Vauxhall Corsa is now available to order. Don’t expect to receive your new car until 2020, though.

The Corsa-e is the ‘flag-bearer for a completely new Corsa range’, which Vauxhall wants to ‘normalise electric car ownership’. A good start is accessibility: the Corsa-e will cost from £26,490 (after the government electric car grant), but you can reserve one now from £500. The first 500 reservations will also receive a free home charging kit.

That seems steep, but all electric Corsas will come well-equipped, with standard features including sat-nav, LED headlights, parking sensors, a DAB radio and a seven-inch touchscreen.

Corsa-e opens for ordering

You can drive a Corsa-e from £270 per month on PCP, over a 47-month period, with a £5,549 deposit payment.

The Corsa-e’s battery is warrantied to deliver 70 percent or more of its capacity up to 100,000 miles or eight years. The 50kWh unit is good for 205 miles of range and can be recharged to 80 percent capacity (using a public fast-charger) in as little as 30 minutes.

In terms of power, the Corsa-e has 136hp and can reach 62mph in 8.1 seconds.

Corsa-e opens for ordering

The new Corsa, along with the all-electric Corsa-e, will debut in the metal at Frankfurt Motor Show in September. First deliveries will start next year, after series production begins in January.

Will this be the model to popularise the electric car? We suspect it may get in a tussle with the new electric Peugeot 208 for that honour.

New Land Rover Defender put to work tracking lost lions

0

Land Rover Defender testing in Africa

A prototype new Land Rover Defender has completed its testing programme with the Tusk Trust in Kenya.

The 4×4 has been helping the charity with lion conservation, tracking down a male that needed his inoperative tracking collar replaced.

Tusk operatives were furnished with a Defender prototype decked out in a unique camouflage to suit the territory. The car came with a snorkel air intake to help it traverse tough terrain, ford rivers and pull trailers, all inside the 14,000-hectare Borana Conservancy.

Land Rover Defender testing in Africa

“This year marks Tusk’s Year of the Lion,” said Charles Mayhew MBE, chief executive of the Tusk Trust.

“Our aim is to raise awareness of the alarming decline in lion populations across Africa. Fortunately, within the Borana Conservancy, there are a number of prides of lion, and tracking and monitoring their movements across this vast and tough environment is vital in order to protect them and reduce any conflict with neighbouring communities.

“The new Defender took everything in its stride, from deep river wading to climbing rocky trails.”

Land Rover Defender testing in Africa

Any worries that the new Defender won’t be battle-hardened like the original should be quelled, at least in part.

“We are now in the advanced stages of the new Defender’s testing and development phase,” said Nick Collins of Jaguar Land Rover.

“Working with our partners at Tusk in Kenya enabled us to gather valuable performance data. The Borana reserve features a wide range of challenging environments, making it a perfect place to test to the extreme the all-terrain attributes of the new Defender.”

Land Rover Defender testing in Africa

The new Defender is expected to debut by the end of this year, and will come in a multitude of body styles.

Whether the new car becomes the backbone of UK infrastructure that the old one was, remains to be seen. Evidently, Land Rover is readying it for more than the school run…

Nectar switches to Esso from BP

0

.Esso partners up with Nectar

Consumer loyalty card Nectar has moved from long-time partner BP to Esso for awarding fuel-purchase points. The decision has been met with criticism, however, due to controversy about Esso owner ExxonMobil’s policies on climate change.

How to find the cheapest petrol and diesel near you.

As BP severs its 16-year deal with Nectar, Esso is also ending its relationship with Tesco for Clubcard points at its 1,100 sites across the UK.

ExxonMobil continues to face allegations that it deliberately withheld information on climate change in order to maintain public confidence in fossil fuels. The European Union is investigating the company at present.

Esso partners up with Nectar

“Exxon has a shameful history of funding climate change denial – paying for fake science and dangerous lies that have prevented us from taking timely action on climate change and forcing the world into the current climate crisis,” commented Molly Scott Cato, Green MEP for South West England and Gibraltar.

“A completely out-of-touch, backwards step”

Friends of the Earth climate campaigner Rachel Kennerley called the move by Nectar “a completely out-of-touch and backwards step… to be partnering with some of the world’s biggest polluters.”

Esso partners up with Nectar

Fuel loyalty schemes in general, don’t find favour with environmental campaigners, who say that any kind of incentives to consume fossil fuels are inappropriate as we transition to alternative-fuel vehicles.

“Promoting fossil fuels is always deeply irresponsible,” said Paul Prozzo, climate campaigner at Greenpeace.

“If someone poured bleach on your cornflakes, would you care whether it’s Cif or Domestos?”

Ford Edge SUV PULLED from UK due to slow sales

0

2018 Ford EdgeThe Ford Edge large SUV has been withdrawn from the UK market following a big reported slowdown in sales.

The five-seat Land Rover Discovery Sport rival was Ford’s range-topping vehicle, priced from £37,000. However, after selling more than 4,000 units in 2017, volume more than halved in 2018.

Ford dealers have now stopped taking brand-new factory orders for the Edge. Existing orders will still be fulfilled, and remaining Edge stocks will be sold during the rest of 2019.

2018 Ford Edge

A Ford spokesman said the decision has been taken in light of the Ford Puma small SUV’s arrival later in 2019.

Puma ordering opens on 26 June “so the overall SUV range remains at three – all compact and medium SUVs”. The Ford Ecosport and Kuga will remain on sale.

2018 Ford Edge

The Edge, added the spokesman, will still continue to be sold in seven other European markets. This decision to limit Edge sales “is in line with our strategy aimed at strengthening the Ford brand and creating a sustainably profitable business in Europe”.

This includes “taking action to improve or exit less profitable vehicle lines”.

There are no plans to restrict Edge availability in other markets outside Europe.

Skoda students show off skills with amazing custom pickup truck

0

Skoda students build custom pickup conceptWhen most students celebrate the end of school, they might end up signing yearbooks or going to a prom.

However, the 35 apprentices at the Skoda Vocational School in the Czech Republic did things a little differently by building a bespoke pickup concept from scratch.

Dubbed the ‘Mountiaq’’ by its creators, this special truck has taken an incredible 2,000 hours of work to develop and build.

Skoda students build custom pickup conceptThe men and women of the Vocational School took a Skoda Kodiaq SUV as a starting point, before chopping the roof off to create the custom pickup body.

An all-new cab and load area were custom-built, with hidden storage units beneath the bed floor for extra practicality.

Even the doors had to be shortened and widened to match the new proportions, whilst the apprentices also added bespoke front and rear bumpers.

Skoda students build custom pickup conceptDesigning and making a fully functional tailgate was one of the biggest challenges faced by the students. Yet they have succeeded in making one which looks and operates like it rolled off a production line.

The front-mounted winch is not just for show, and is attached to a specially designed bull bar to withstand the forces of extreme off-road action.

Lifted suspension is combined with 17-inch wheels, the latter wearing rubber which is designed for maximum grip in the dirt. A 2.0 turbocharged petrol engine and four-wheel drive system means it should be able to venture far into the unknown.

Skoda students build custom pickup conceptPicking the special Sunset Orange paint means there will be no losing the Mountiaq in even the wildest terrain. The hue is almost as bright as the gigantic LED light bar mounted to the roof of the pickup.

More bespoke lighting features throughout, including in the load bed, in the radiator grille, and even with a glowing Skoda logo in the interior headlining.

The special headlining is just one of a number of small hidden details, including an integrated refrigerator, walkie talkies, and 3D printed wheel ornaments.

Skoda students build custom pickup conceptInside the Mountiaq, the students have shown off the new logo they created for the truck, with it stitched into the front seats.

More Sunset Orange is used to highlight key items of trim throughout the interior, including the gear lever and the steering wheel.

The students have also ensured that the Mountiaq sounds as extreme as it looks. Standard 320-watt speakers are now attached to a 2,000-watt subwoofer and a 2,000-watt amplifier.

Skoda students build custom pickup conceptThis special creation marks the sixth time Skoda students have had the chance to build a project car at the end of their studies.

Developing the Student Concept Car is more than just youthful exuberance. All of the students who successfully complete the Vocational School are offered a full-time job with Skoda.

Whilst there may be no plans at present to put the Mountiaq into production, it does at least demonstrate the bright future the Czech company has ahead – not to mention its students…

Volkswagen ID R claims electric Nurburgring lap record

0

Volkswagen ID R Nurburgring record

The all-electric Nurburgring lap record has been smashed by the Volkswagen ID R racer. The hillclimb champ, with Pikes Peak and Goodwood already under its belt, set its sights on the notorious Nordschleife, posting a time of 6min 5.3sec.

The new car is a very different beast to the one that dominated Pikes Peak and Goodwood. The Nurburgring circuit features many straights, with the main one longer than the entire Goodwood hillclimb, and these demand a high top speed. So VW had to reduce drag, which also resulted in a loss of downforce.

Enter an F1-style Drag Reduction System (DRS), good for making the car 20 percent slipperier when the going gets straight and fast(er)

Batteries are easily drained, however, so the ID R’s VMAX is ‘only’ around 155mph. It could be much more, but even with the 20 percent battery boost from KERS, the full 12.9-mile lap necessitates tactical power conservation.

Volswagen ID R: how quick is quick?

For the avoidance of doubt, the time is a full 40 seconds quicker than the previous electric record-holder, the NIO EP9. The EP9 is a road car, though, so a better benchmark ought to be the legendary Stefan Bellof lap in the Porsche 956, which the ID R beats by six seconds.

Until last year – when Porsche went record-hunting with the 919 Evo LMP1 car – Bellof held the lap record for 35 years.

The ID R team was aiming for a 6min 15sec lap, but given VW had two chassis to work with, and quick-charge times of 20 minutes, consistent lapping paid dividends.

What’s next? Well, there’s the Festival of Speed at Goodwood coming up soon, at which the ID R came very close to the overall record last year. Maybe the ‘Ring spec car will be there to make it happen? We shall see…

What’s the point of all this?

Volkswagen ID R Nurburgring record

There’s no better arena to prove technology to be used in future road cars than the racetrack. The ID R is, in effect, the halo machine for VW’s new ID electric-only model line.

Advancements made in this car today will inform what we see in ID road cars tomorrow.

Top Marques 2019

The 16th Top Marques Monaco supercar show got underway at the weekend, as well-dressed people converged on the Grimaldi Forum to gawp at expensive machinery, jewellery and clothing. If cars like the Ferrari 488 Pista and the FXX-K Evo float your super-expensive gin palace, keep clicking for more photos from the event.

McLaren GT

Top Marques 2019

There were no fewer than six world premieres at this year’s Top Marques Monaco, including the new McLaren GT. Here’s Prince Albert II of Monaco helping to pull the wraps off McLaren’s latest model, while the onlookers reflect on the huge amount of money they have just spent on a coffee and a pain au chocolat.

Here’s Prince Albert again, this time pulling what appears to be a bed sheet off the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera On Her Majesty’s Secret Service edition.

Top Marques 2019

Just 50 cars will be built, each one painted Olive Green to match the 1969 Aston Martin DBS driven by James Bond in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. There’s no truth in the rumour that Renault will launch a Megane A View to a Kill edition to honour the Renault 11 driven by Roger Moore in the 1985 film.

Ferox Azaris

Top Marques 2019

In a photo notable for the disappointing absence of a bed sheet, here’s Prince Albert getting to grips with the Ferox Azaris. As Troy Wheeler explains the technology behind the Australian off-roader, the Prince is wondering if it could provide suitable transport for the slopes during the next skiing season.

Top Marques 2019

The Ferox Azaris isn’t your standard off-roader. The working prototype features four in-wheel motors with a volumetric efficiency of up to 98 percent, with power sourced from a combustion engine or an electric motor linked to a fluid pump. Its rocker-style suspension is similar to the system used on the Mars Rover. We suspect Ferox has been inundated with enquiries from Dubai…

Speaking on Stavros969’s YouTube channel, Zac Mihajlovic said the Zacaria SC is an “F1 hotrod that you can drive on the road”. It’s powered by a Ferrari 6.3-litre V12 engine, “so that it sounds like F1 cars from the glory days”. Amazingly, it comes with a lifetime guarantee. Beat that, Kia.

Devinci Cars

Top Marques 2019

Devinci is a French car manufacturer established in 2018 to “create a brand of electric vehicles with a retro look”. The DB-718 is produced in three versions: the 100-off Brigitte, the 95-off Lucie, and the most exclusive of all, the five-off Adele.

Supercar Sunday 2019 at Goodwood

0

Goodwood Supercar Sunday

Goodwood’s Breakfast Club Supercar Sunday is an awe-inspiring display of power and panache. It’s free to attend, but does require an early start for the keenest of car enthusiasts. Here is a selection of our favourites from this enormous gathering.

Audi R8 V10

Audi R8 at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

Audi was a no-name in the supercar sphere 12 years ago when the original R8 debuted. What it gave us was a pretender to 911 sports car supremacy in more exotic overalls with underpinnings courtesy of Lamborghini. It only grew more ‘super’ over the years, with the addition of a 5.2-litre V10 engine. The latest iteration was our supercar of choice for the drive down to Goodwood.

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

The SVJ is the last of the line for this raging bull. A mighty 770hp, active aerodynamics and rear-wheel steering keep the old beast an up-to-date fighter.

Lamborghini Murcielago SV

Lamborghini Murcielago SV at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

The first Super Veloce of the new millennium was a be-winged Murcielago with 670hp. Powering it was the last of the long-lived Bizzarrini V12s, which would be replaced by a re-designed unit in the Aventador.

McLaren Senna

McLaren Senna at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

A true no-nonsense approach to building a hypercar: it ain’t pretty, but it goes. If you can’t stomach the Senna’s looks, you probably can’t stomach the performance, either. That design is all about downforce…

McLaren P1 LM

McLaren P1 LM at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

The day the P1 was revealed was the day McLaren truly came back. This hyper-hybrid could suck itself to the ground and spit out blue flames while spitting out a lap record. The drama of its performance could never quite be matched. That was until Lanzante made a road-legal GTR version called the LM and battered the Nurburgring with it.

McLaren F1 GTR

McLaren F1 GTR at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

What is widely regarded as the greatest supercar ever made, the F1 held the position of fastest car in the world for nearly a decade, topping 243mph. In spite of being designed as a road car, the GTR version – pictured here – won its debut Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995.

McLaren-Mercedes SLR

McLaren-Mercedes SLR at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

McLaren’s supercar sequel was much derided. Being a front-engined GT evolved from the Mercedes SL, the SLR was never going to be an F1 successor. As such, we feel it gets unfair treatment: it’s seriously quick, and looks as good as it sounds. That’s to say, it’s a 200mph super GT with the soundtrack of a WW2 fighter plane.

Ferrari 812 Superfast

Ferrari 812 Superfast at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

It might be a front-engined GT, but with a 6.5-litre 800hp V12, even the legendary F50 would quake in its presence. It’s the heart of the LaFerrari hypercar in a classy suit.

Ferrari 458 Speciale

Ferrari 458 Speciale at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

The 458 Speciale is the last of the screaming naturally aspirated V8s. That alone makes it special, but the way it drives makes it one of the best-loved Ferraris of all time.

Ford GT

Ford GT at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

Ford’s is the supercar born out of a Le Mans legend, and its mission to smash Ferrari. While the original GT40 saw development hours at Goodwood Motor Circuit, this latest homage was there only on display. The race version of the car at Supercar Sunday aimed to follow in the original’s footsteps at Le Mans – and indeed it did, with a class win in 2016.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

More a super GT than an out-and-out supercar, but the DBS leads Aston’s stable with over 700hp on tap, so who are we to ignore its presence? Anything with a V12 that can run rings round a Pagani Zonda gets a nod from us, especially if it’s the freshly-unveiled Volante version.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Porsche 911 GT2 RS at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

No bouncer is stopping anything with widowmaker blood from getting into any club. It’ll keep a McLaren 720S honest both in terms of price and performance. It even bested big-bro 918 around the Nordschleife. It’s also the car the Duke of Richmond decided to show up to Supercar Sunday in…

Porsche Carrera GT

Porsche Carrera GT at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

Porsche’s screaming V10 was the product of stillborn race projects from F1 to Le Mans. Before you even get to the car’s carbon construction, snappy yet satisfying dynamics and manual ’box, that makes one of the all-time great analogue supercars.

Ascari Ecosse

Ascari Ecosse at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

Even in the company of the McLaren F1, Porsche Carrera GT, Ford GT and McLaren Senna, the Ascari Ecosse is a bit of a supercar unicorn. It’s one of just 17 made as homologation cars, with a lightweight fibreglass body and BMW V8 power.

Pagani Huayra Roadster

Pagani Huayra at Goodwood Supercar Sunday

One of the greatest of the 2000s hypercar upstarts, Pagani’s latest offering is the blingy and boutique Huayra Roadster. If there’s a cloud of flailing arms with cameras on the end of them at Supercar Sunday, you can bet it’s either a Koenigsegg, Bugatti or Pagani at the centre of it. Keep clicking for more incredible cars at Goodwood’s Breakfast Club Supercar Sunday.

Drivers who pass first time are most likely to speed

0

First time test passers speeding

New data reveals that drivers who passed their test first time are more likely to speed. Indeed, this group makes up nearly a third of those caught for driving too fast.

A Freedom of Information request by insurance website GoCompare, in combination with a survey of 2,000 UK adults, showed that 29 percent of drivers caught speeding had passed their test at the first attempt. For comparison, those who passed after five attempts made up 19.3 percent of speeding convictions.

Faster doesn’t always mean more dangerous

Although the first-time passers seem to drive faster, it’s those who needed more than five attempts to pass who get into most trouble elsewhere on the road.

A quarter (24.8 percent) of self-inflicted damage cases, and the same proportion of accidents with other vehicles, were caused by this ‘five-plus’ group. First-time passers, by contrast, made up just 7.8 percent of self-inflicted damage claims and 17.7 percent of collisions.

The five-plus passers are also four times more likely to ignore road signs, and six times more likely to use their phone while driving. Overall, 60 percent of the group have driving convictions, compared with 33 percent of first-time passers.

In terms of how long we’re taking to pass our driving tests, only Scotland, the North East, and Yorkshire and Humberside have seen increases in pass-rates during the 2017-2018 period, by comparison with 2014-2015.

Overall across the UK, first-time pass rates are down by 3.6 percent, at a record low of 43.6 percent.
