  1. In *my experience* cyclists, at least in Ireland, DO NOT RESPECT ANYONE OR ANYTHING. It seems to me they think themselves above the law, cycling against lights, traffic, diagonal, on/off footpaths, BULLYING AND HARASSING PEDESTRIANS AND DRIVERS.
    I believe cyclists should be required to have a license and insurance, besides lights, vests, helmets, bells, etc. And made to abide by the law OR ACTUALLY FACE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES.

    • I absolutely agree with MJ Dow. I am an elderly and disabled pedestrian. I have never had a car and in fact never learnt to drive (and never wanted to). I am simply a pedestrian – or used to be. However I am now scared to go out as I am so frequently verbally abused and threatened by cyclists riding on the pavements simply because I remind them its ilegal for them t do so. Even when the roads here were empty of cars during lockdown there was actually an increase in pavement cyclists. After dark it is even worse as they ride WITHOUT lights all ove the place – including pavements. No one does anything about it and its terrifying and tramatising for pedestrians. Repeated “near misses” as they wizz past us terrify us and deter us from going out.

    • Hi ,I am a keen cyclist and also drive, i do agree with some of your points, it drives me crazy when i see cyclists jumping through red lights , even when im cycling i just shake my head. I have cycled in Eire in the Dundalk, Ardee area and i cant remember if you have a similar thing at the traffic lights as we do in scotland , this is a green painted section at the front exactly below the traffic lights, this is to give cyclist an area for them to get priority to be at the front. I think this is stupid, it just encourages cyclists to weave in and out to get to the front of the queue to gain what? I sit at least 5 or 6 cars back, i will still get through the lights and the first 6 cars wont be stuck behind the cyclist. I would have no objection to a test, and it is for the police to be more strict , lets face it motor vehicles cant go through lights without bearing the brunt and so we should. on another note i lost my licence for a year because of a cyclist and i did nothing wrong, stitched up in court. The cyclist had went through a red light and i would have collided with him if i had been at the junction 3 seconds earlier, i got in to an arguement and scuffle, its a long story but quite incredible how things can go so bad.
