New study reveals the ingredients for a great hot hatchback

Research by Peugeot has uncovered what British enthusiasts think makes a hot hatchback fun to drive, including acceleration and steering feel

The Peugeot 205 GTi was voted the most-popular hot hatchback from the French marque’s impressive back catalogue

Peugeot has identified the factors that UK car enthusiasts believe make for the ultimate hot hatchback.

A survey of British motorists revealed that almost two-thirds (61 percent) thought acceleration was the most important hot hatch credential.

This was followed by agile handling, a key factor for 52 percent of respondents, then keen steering feel – highlighted by 39 percent.

Other elements to create a top hot hatchback include engine sound (35 percent), power-to-weight ratio (30 percent) and braking performance (26 percent).

Peugeot also asked British drivers what the GTI badge means to them. Almost three-quarters (70 percent) defined it as the performance version of a standard car.

When it comes to searching for a new car, Peugeot’s survey found that performance was important to 79 percent of respondents, including non-car enthusiasts.

A brand’s reputation was a major factor for almost everyone questioned (91 percent), followed by styling (87 percent) and being fun to drive (76 percent).

Peugeot’s research also showed that almost three-quarters (73 percent) of car enthusiasts are interested in motorsport, with 57 percent more attracted to performance cars that are influenced by racing.

Notably for Peugeot, given it has just launched the electric e-208 GTI, sustainability also matters to 74 percent of hot hatchback buyers.

Top Peugeot is still the 205 GTI

With 71 percent considering the heritage and legacy of a marque, Peugeot asked respondents to pick their favourite GTI from its back catalogue.

Unsurprisingly, the legendary Peugeot 205 GTI emerged as the top choice, selected by 20 percent of those asked. This was followed by the more recent 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport, nominated by 12 percent.

Steve Wass, managing director of Peugeot UK, said, “At Peugeot, we’re immensely proud of our GTI heritage, and the impact our models have had on the automotive world.

“The enduring popularity of GTI shows that driving pleasure, one of the cornerstones of our brand, is still key to drivers and car enthusiasts today. With the E-208 GTI now open for orders, we’re eagerly looking ahead to customers experiencing the first fully electric GTI model.”

Orders for the new 281hp Peugeot E-208 GTi can be placed now, with prices starting from £33,495 after the £1,500 Electric Car Grant is deducted.
