Mercedes-Benz SL review

From £79,990

The Mercedes-Benz SL adds some Hollywood glamour to the luxury two-seater sector, falling mid-way between a sports car and a grand tourer.

  • Mercedes-Benz SL
  • For: Grace, pace, space
  • Against: Expensive, getting old, lacks precision
  • Verdict: Accomplished and sophisticated, although its best years are behind it

The Mercedes-Benz SL adds some Hollywood glamour to the luxury two-seater sector, falling mid-way between a sports car and a grand tourer.

For something so large, the SL manages to remain on the right side of vulgarity, offering a rock-solid image and an air of sophistication.

Prices start from around £80,000, with two petrol engines available: a 3.0-litre V6 producing 367hp in the SL 400, or a 4.7-litre V8 developing 455hp in the SL 500. Both engines are paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

There’s a long list of standard equipment, including an Airscarf heater in the seat headrests, which is almost essential in the UK.

Roof up, the SL offers tin-top levels of refinement and quietness, while the boot remains practical even with the roof down.

It might lack the dynamic precision of a true sports car, but the SL counters with pace and grace in abundance.
