Land Rover Discovery Sport review

From £32,430

As a family-friendly SUV with up to seven seats, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is superb. Especially when the going gets tough.

  • Land Rover Discovery Sport
  • For: Ride comfort, technology, off-road ability
  • Against: Auto gearbox not great, gets expensive
  • Verdict: The SUV of choice for adventurous families

The Discovery Sport occupies the middle ground between the Range Rover Evoque and the full-size Land Rover Discovery.

It’s one of the best-selling – and indeed best – vehicles in the Land Rover range.

Car reviews on Motoring Research

Unlike most of its rivals, the Discovery Sport is great off-road. Well, unless you opt for the entry-level front-wheel-drive version. There’s also the option of seven seats.

Throw into the mix a rock-solid image, much-improved cabin and plenty of space, and you’ve got one of the most credible family SUVs on sale.

Ride comfort is excellent, even on 21-inch alloy wheels, although the nine-speed transmission, which is standard on 4×4 models, is a little hesitant at low speeds.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine is the most refined, but the 2.0 diesel delivers more oomph and is the best choice for towing. The P300e plug-in hybrid is tax-efficient, but expensive to buy.

As an all-rounder, the Discovery Sport is superb, especially when the going gets tough.
