Scottish man drives 250,000 miles in his Nissan Qashqai

Craig Barker took only nine years to drive his 2017 Nissan Qashqai the equivalent distance between the Earth and the Moon

A Nissan Qashqai owner from Scotland is celebrating a major milestone, having racked up 250,000 miles in his family SUV.

Craig Barker from Lanarkshire bought his 17-plate Qashqai after it had spent time as a dealership demonstrator.

When Barker purchased the Qashqai Tekna in December 2017, the Sunderland-made SUV had 3,000 miles on the clock.

Nine years later, its 1.5-litre diesel engine has amassed a further 247,000 miles. ‘‘My Nissan Qashqai is one of the most reliable and economical cars I have ever owned. It has been absolutely brilliant,” said Barker.

“Despite the mileage, it is still going strong, with its original exhaust, original clutch and even some of its original rear brake components”, Barker added.

“Of course, I have replaced tyres and other wear-and-tear items over the years, and I have always made sure the car has been serviced and maintained to a high standard.”

Along with being a very dependable SUV, the Qashqai also has important sentimental value to Craig. It was purchased with money left to him by his late mother Jeanette, who passed away after being diagnosed with cancer.

“That is what makes my car so incredibly special to me,’’ said Craig. ‘‘Every time I get behind the wheel, I am reminded of her. And in many ways, the car has become a lasting connection to her memory.’’

On reaching the milestone, Barker said: ‘‘Having passed the 250,000-mile mark, I’m keen for people to know just how fantastic this car has been for me. A quarter of a million miles is a milestone I am incredibly proud of.

“It has travelled approximately the distance between the Earth and the Moon, and it continues to put a smile on my face every time I drive it.”

A Nissan spokesperson added: ‘‘It was wonderful to hear from Craig and learn about the Qashqai ownership experience he has enjoyed – and continues to enjoy – and the remarkable distance he has travelled in his car.

‘‘Qashqai is a model everyone at Nissan is particularly proud of and we are delighted that its popularity shows no sign of waning. In fact, it is one of our greatest success stories thanks to its compelling combination of practical design, everyday usability and clever technologies.

‘‘Long may its success continue and thank you to Craig for sharing his story with us.’’

  1. He must be lucky, my 2020 qashqai has only done 48000 miles, has full factory service history, yet has had to have a new fuel pump, wheel bearings, brake disks and cost me a small fortune refilling the air conditioning. Also it now has a bearing whining that matches the engine speed (to be diagnosed). It’s a fantastic car to drive but reliable, I THINK NOT!!!
