Porsche confirms four-cylinder Macan

We hear it first hand: Porsche will launch a four-pot Macan

Porsche has confirmed that its new Macan compact SUV will be available with a four-cylinder engine in the near future.

When asked by MR, Porsche engine specialist Antoon Janssen commented: “There will be four-cylinder engines added to the range shortly.”

Although we’ve previously speculated on four-cylinder engines being fitted to the Macan, it’s the first time Porsche has confirmed it. When probed, Janssen wasn’t giving anything away:

“You will find out more details soon. I can tell you no more.”

When the first Macans are delivered to UK customers in April 2014, they will come with a choice of three V6 engines: a 340hp 3.0-litre petrol, a 258hp 3.0-litre diesel and a 400hp 3.6-litre petrol.

We expect the four-cylinder engines will be turbocharged petrol and diesels, probably from the Volkswagen range.

Currently, the most efficient Macan will be the diesel. It offers between 44.8 and 46.3mpg (depending on tyres) – while even the hot Turbo (capable of 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds) can manage between 30.7 and 31.7mpg.

With Porsche emphasising that the Macan offers performance, efficiency and versatility without compromise, it’s no surprise that the company will be offering even more efficient engines.

This means the Macan will be the first four-pot Porsche since 968 production ended in 1995.

Do you think a four-cylinder Macan will be a disgrace to the Porsche name? Or is it going to be a hit with compact SUV buyers? Let us know.
