Toyota RAV4 review

From £31,090

The RAV4 boasts an excellent safety rating, fuel economy figures up to 50mpg, low CO2 emissions and bold styling.

  • Toyota RAV4
  • For: Bold styling, good to drive, efficient hybrid powertrain
  • Against: Lacklustre CVT, woeful infotainment system
  • Verdict: The best RAV4 since the original in 1994

The Toyota RAV4 is a smart looking SUV. All models are hybrid-powered, with front-wheel-drive versions pairing a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 215hp output.

Opt for four-wheel drive and an additional electric motor for the rear axle boosts output slightly to 219hp. Drives goes via a CVT auto transmission, with short distances achievable on electric power only.

Few owners will venture off the beaten track, but the RAV4 is good off-road, even on standard road tyres.

There are four trim levels, kicking off with the Icon, which boasts 17-inch alloy wheels, a full suite of safety systems, 8.0-inch touchscreen, DAB radio and front and rear LED lights.

The cabin is pleasingly premium, while the infotainment system now comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The RAV4 also boasts an excellent safety rating, fuel economy figures up to 50.4mpg, low CO2 emissions and bold styling.
