Renault Twizy review

From £11,695

The Renault Twizy is a perfect electric car for city commuters but most others will find the compromises too much.

  • Renault Twizy
  • For: Cheap to buy, fun to drive, zero emissions
  • Against: Two seats, harsh ride, exposure to the elements
  • Verdict: Great fun in small doses

The Renault Twizy is among Britain’s most affordable new electric ‘cars’.

However, you’ll have to make one or two sacrifices.

It features in-line seating, so the passenger is behind the driver. Alternatively, you can opt for a Cargo version, which offers a 180-litre/115kg boot instead of a second seat.

Either way, you’ll feel exposed to the elements, although optional scissor doors and zip-on windows provide some shelter.

The 50mph top speed and 62 miles of range will be enough for most buyers, while the ability to fully recharge in just three-and-a-half hours using a domestic socket makes the Twizy perfect for city commuters.

You have to factor in the cost of battery rental, with prices starting from £45 a month.

The Twizy Expression offers a lockable 31-litre storage box, heated windscreen and steel wheels, while the Dynamique adds floor mats, a choice of 14 colours and 13-inch alloys.
