Lexus RC review

From £44,170

If we were judging the merits of a coupe on the strength of its styling and equipment, the Lexus RC would be the class-leader.

  • Lexus RC
  • For: Styling, equipment, exclusivity
  • Against: Not fun to drive, cramped in the rear
  • Verdict: Stylish and high-tech premium coupe that flatters to deceive

If we were judging the merits of a coupe on the strength of its styling and equipment, the Lexus RC would be the class-leader.

It’s not as beautiful as the flagship LC, but the RC’s striking design is a welcome tonic in a sector dominated by play-it-safe two-door versions of saloons.

Even the entry-level RC packs the kind of kit that would normally cost extra on a car with a £44,000 price tag. It’s also efficient, with the 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid delivering between 40.9 and 45.5mpg.

Alternatively, you could opt for the BMW M4-rivalling RC F: a track-focused 5.0-litre V8 wildcard.

Unfortunately, its dynamics can’t live up to the styling promise, with the RC erring on the side of waft. It’s also too cramped in the rear, while the dashboard is looking dated.

On the plus side, it’s likely to be extremely reliable and rather exclusive.
