The BMW 7 Series' chief rival is the S-Class, but while it can’t match the Mercedes-Benz for ride comfort, it’s more rewarding to drive.

You’re unlikely to buy a 7 Series – few people do – but it represents peak BMW.

The company’s flagship saloon is loaded with the kind of safety and driver-assistance tech that should filter down the hatchback or crossover you’ll be driving in a few years.

Unfortunately, that gargantuan grille – introduced as part of a 2019 update – may follow suit.

The range starts from £71,000, while the long-wheelbase version adds an extra 140mm between the wheels, plus around £3,500 to the price.

Its chief rival is the S-Class, but while it can’t match the Mercedes-Benz for ride comfort, it’s more rewarding to drive.

Pity not many 7 Series owners will spend time in the driver’s seat. Running costs will be high, of course, but the plug-in hybrid variant offers close to 30 miles of electric range.

Just don’t mention the cost of options. Oh, and depreciation.
