Toyota Prius review

From £24,875

The Toyota Prius is the brand generic for affordable green transport, although it’s facing a battle for supremacy from the likes of Hyundai and Kia.

  • Toyota Prius
  • For: Efficiency, warranty, equipment
  • Against: Expensive PHEV, dull to drive, divisive styling
  • Verdict: The brand generic for hybrid vehicles

The Toyota Prius is the brand generic for affordable green transport, although it’s facing a battle for supremacy from the likes of Hyundai and Kia.

Not that the Prius is about to roll over and die – order an Uber and it’s likely you’ll be greeted by Toyota’s hybrid warrior.

There are three versions available: Prius Hybrid, Prius Plug-in Hybrid and Prius+ Hybrid. The latter is a seven-seat MPV that’s beginning to show its age, especially in a market dominated by SUVs.

The Prius Hybrid is the big-seller, offering fuel economy of 60.1 to 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 84g/km.

It’s a quiet, efficient and refined car with a long list of standard equipment. The more expensive Prius Plug-in Hybrid boosts theoretical economy to 188.3 to 217.2mpg, while dropping emissions to just 29g/km.

Crucially, up to 39 miles of electric-only range is available in the PHEV version.
