Subaru Forester review

From £36,335

The fifth-generation Subaru Forester arrived in 2019. It largely retains the same formula as previous models.

  • Subaru Forester
  • For: Off-road ability, practicality, equipment
  • Against: Quite slow, relatively inefficient
  • Verdict: SUV with genuine off-road ability

The fifth-generation Subaru Forester arrived in 2019. It retains the same formula as previous models, with one or two notable exceptions.

For the first time, the Forester boasts a hybrid powertrain, with a 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Although just one mile of electric range is available, the Forester E-Boxer can deliver 34.7mpg on a combined cycle, emitting 154g/km of CO2.

With a top speed of 117mph and 0-62mph time of 11.8 seconds, the Forester isn’t particularly quick, but thanks to a revised X-mode, it’ll venture further off-road than most SUVs.

It also features Subaru’s excellent EyeSight driver assistance tech, along with new facial recognition software. Standard specification includes LED headlights, heated seats, an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

All Subarus benefit from an impressive five-year/100,000-mile warranty, while prices start from just over £36,000 for the entry-level SE.
