Lexus IS review

From £33,935

The Lexus IS is a thoroughly Japanese take on a compact executive formula perfected by the Germans.

  • Lexus IS
  • For: Efficiency, reliability, standard equipment
  • Against: Lacks precision, dated infotainment, getting old
  • Verdict: Looks good and should be cheap to run, but lacks driver appeal

The Lexus IS is a thoroughly Japanese take on a compact executive formula perfected by the Germans.

Although it arrived in 2013, a facelift in 2017 helps keep it relevant in the face of strong competition from the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and others.

The IS cannot offer class-leading handling or performance. Instead, it majors on comfort and efficiency to bring something different to the table.

To this end, there’s only one powertrain available: a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid badged ‘300h’. It’s far from quick, but with fuel economy of 44.1 to 48.7mpg, it should be cost-effective.

The three trim levels, in ascending order, are IS, F Sport and Takumi – and all models are well-equipped, The F Sport is popular with UK buyers, but cannot offer the performance or precision to match its chiseled styling.

Also, the IS is hamstrung by a dated infotainment system and lacklustre CVT transmission.
