Ford Mondeo review

From £24,930

The current Mondeo is the best version of Ford’s family car to date, which makes it sad that fewer people are buying it.

  • Ford Mondeo
  • For: Styling, practicality, comfort
  • Against: Lacks precision, feels big, hybrid not great
  • Verdict: Once popular, now unfashionable, the Mondeo has a lot to offer

The current Mondeo is the best version of Ford’s family car to date, which makes it sad that fewer people are buying it.

These days, ‘Mondeo man’ drives a BMW 3 Series, while families prefer SUVs and crossovers to hatchbacks and estates.

It’s more upmarket than ever before, more practical, and there’s even a hybrid version.

The only real backward step is that it’s no longer great to drive. Mondeos of old came alive on a B-road, whereas the fourth-generation car prefers to stay on the straight and, er, wide.

There are four trim levels: Zetec, ST-Line, Titanium and Vignale. Engine options include a 2.0-litre petrol-electric hybrid and a pair of 2.0 diesels. Both body styles are extremely practical, especially the estate.

We also think the Ford is as good looking as any of its rivals. It might not be a fashionable choice, but the Mondeo still has plenty to offer in 2020.
