BMW X4 review

From £45,775

The X4 is less practical than the X3 and only marginally better to drive, yet it costs more to buy new.

  • BMW X4
  • For: Ride, handling, cabin quality
  • Against: Not hugely practical, divisive looks, expensive
  • Verdict: Nicer to drive than the X3, but not worth the additional cost

If you like the feeling of getting a little less car for your money, the BMW X4 makes a lot of sense.

Perhaps we’re being unfair, but the facts remain: the X4 is less practical than the X3 and only marginally better to drive, yet it costs more to buy new.

BMW would counter this by saying that, thanks to its sloping roofline, the X4 looks better (many would disagree), while the dynamic upgrade is worth the additional outlay.

Prices start from almost £46,000, although the flagship X4 M Competition costs nearly twice that amount.

There’s no entry-level SE model, which helps explain the higher starting price, with the X4 offered in Sport, M Sport and M Sport X trim levels.

There’s also a pair of sporty M versions, with the M40d diesel offering the best blend of performance and economy.

All X4s are good to drive, with a high-quality cabin and premium image.
