  • BMW 8 Series
  • For: Thunderous M850i, luxurious cabin, touring comfort
  • Against: Lacks sharpness, hugely expensive, not practical
  • Verdict: Large GT majors on comfort and interior style

Is the BMW 8 Series a luxury grand tourer or a sports coupe? In truth, it’s a bit of both, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on what you’re looking for in a car.

There are three body styles available: two-door Coupe, open-top Convertible and four-door Gran Coupe.

Prices start from £72,000, but you’ll pay £107,000 for the flagship M850i Convertible. Still, it is powered by a mighty 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, providing enough oomph to hit 62mph in 3.7 seconds.

Alternatively, there’s a 340hp petrol engine in the 840i, plus an excellent 320hp 3.0 straight-six diesel in the 840d.

As a flagship coupe or convertible, the BMW 8 Series ticks many boxes. It’s loaded with technology, features a luxurious cabin and has proper presence on the road.

It’s let down by a lack of handling sharpness, cramped rear seats and eye-watering prices.
