BMW 2 Series review

From £27,105

The driver-pleasing 2 Series Coupe looks good and feels great inside, but is pricier than the more practical 1 Series... and it's due for replacement within months.

  • BMW 2 Series Coupe
  • For: Styling, interior quality, choice of engines
  • Against: Limited practicality, more expensive than the 1 Series
  • Verdict: A small BMW with rear-driven dynamics is a dying breed

Launched in 2014, the BMW 2 Series is essentially a two-door version of the previous-generation 1 Series.

That said, because it’s based on the old 1 Series, it retains its rear-wheel-drive chassis, which makes it the small BMW of choice for keen drivers.

That’s assuming they can live with the reduced practicality, because while the 2 Series is far from small, it’s tricky to get into the back seats and the boot lacks the flexibility of a hatchback.

There are five 2 Series models available: Coupe, Convertible, Gran Coupe, Active Tourer and Gran Tourer (the latter two both MPVs). The most recent addition is the Gran Coupe, which is based on the new 1 Series and offers four-door practicality.

In Coupe form, there are two trim levels: Sport and M Sport. There’s a wide range of engines, including a blistering six-cylinder in the M240i.

The 2 Series looks good and feels great inside, but is pricier than the more practical 1 Series.
