The Audi A7 Sportback is a more practical hatchback version of the A6 saloon, with the tech and wizardry of the flagship A8.

  • Audi A7 Sportback 2020
  • For: Space, cabin quality, engines
  • Against: Dull to drive, unsettled ride, expensive
  • Verdict: An Audi A6 with more style and practicality

If you’re struggling to place the Audi A7 Sportback, it’s best to view it as a more practical version of the A6 saloon, with the tech and wizardry of the flagship A8.

There are three versions available: the standard A7 Sportback, S7 Sportback and RS7 Sportback.

In all cases, a few must-have options will add a significant chunk to the list price. The RS7 is a six-figure car with ease.

The sloping roofline restricts rear headroom for the tallest passengers, but a 535-litre boot gives the A7 the edge over the A6.

The standard A7 comes with a choice of one petrol and three diesel engines, while the S7 is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel producing 349hp.

The flagship RS7 boasts a twin-turbocharged V8 producing 600hp.

All are beautifully made, but while they’re fast, they seem somewhat numb to drive. Ride quality is also a tad unsettled.
