Mazda has announced the introduction of Google Gemini technology to the latest version of its top-selling CX-5.Â
The popular family SUV will gain Gemini for CX-5 models equipped with built-in Google software, across supported European markets and languages.
Once enabled by the driver, Google Gemini replaces the existing Google Assistant system. It uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deliver more natural voice commands.
Instead of drivers having to remember specific phrases for voice commands inside their CX-5, Google Gemini means requests can be made in conversational language instead.Â
The addition of Gemini follows on from a promise to introduce intuitive hands-free technology, made when the third-generation CX-5 was first revealed.Â
The latest model has ditched Mazda’s traditional rotary controller, relying on voice commands and a touchscreen for infotainment instead.
Gemini keeps the conversation going

Google Gemini is being deployed to Mazda CX-5 models using over-the-air (OTA) updates, and comes with support for 12 different European languages.Â
Once installed, drivers need to sign in to their Google Account, with full functionality requiring a data connection.
Drivers can search for navigation destinations based on their preferences or purpose, rather than having to offer a specific address. They can ask Gemini to navigate to a top-rated cafe, for instance, then further refine details on the way.
Requests for music, through services such as Spotify or YouTube Music, can also be made conversationally, with Gemini able to create playlists to suit the driver’s mood.
Gemini can also summarise and read incoming messages, helping drivers tobunderstand the context before responding. Its natural language capability is said to make dictating message responses easier via voice commands.
Five million cars and counting

Earlier this year, Mazda announced it had sold five million examples of the CX-5. Some 105,000 cars have found homes in the UK alone, making it the Japanese marque’s most successful model.
First launched in 2011, the CX-5 has evolved through three different generations. The latest model went on sale earlier this year.Â
Such was the degree of interest in the third-generation car, Mazda reported its biggest ever order bank before sales began.
Prices for the Mazda CX-5 remain unchanged with the addition of Google Gemini technology. The entry-level Prime Line model costs from £31,550.Â
All versions of the new CX-5 come equipped with a 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G petrol engine, featuring Mazda M Hybrid technology.
