Now replaced by the current Peugeot 308, launched in 2021, this previous model still has plenty going for it. Not only is it good looking, it’s also available as a hatchback, estate and the fun-to-drive 308 GTI.
As a used car, the 308 is a worthy alternative to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Prices start from around £4,000, with a wide choice of engines and trim levels to pick from.
The 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5 diesel major on efficiency, while the 1.6 turbocharged petrol in the GTI delivers 250hp or 270hp, matched by an excellent chassis to create one of the best hot hatchbacks of the modern era.
The 308’s cabin retains a premium feel, while all models deliver a very French blend of fine handling and comfort.
Minus points? Rear-seat space is woefully inadequate and the infotainment system is fiddly to use on the move. Not everyone will appreciate Peugeot’s trademark small steering wheel either.
It’s also worth noting that some rival hatchbacks, such as the Kia Ceed, come with substantially longer warranties than the three years and 60,000 miles offered by Peugeot. So you might find a used alternative that offers greater piece of mind.
