Lexus ES review

From £34,700

The Lexus ES is relatively unknown in the UK, but is the company’s best-selling saloon around the world.

  • Lexus ES
  • For: Efficiency, refinement, specification
  • Against: Only one engine, dull to drive, divisive styling
  • Verdict: The ES offers comfort and efficiency in a sporty sector

The Lexus ES is relatively unknown in the UK, but is the company’s best-selling saloon around the world.

It’s designed to take the fight to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and it does so armed with a couple of notable strengths.

Not only is it one of the smoothest and most refined cars in its class, it also promises the running costs typically associated with a sector below.

This is mainly thanks to an efficient 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, with the ES 300h promising fuel economy between 48.7 and 53.2mpg.

There are three versions available: ES, F Sport and Takumi. Standard specification is generous, with all models boasting a long list of technology and safety equipment.

While the F Sport looks the part, its firmer ride is at odds with the comfort proposition of the ES.

It’ll be a niche player in the UK, but for some, that’s part of the appeal.
