Jeep Renegade review

From £23,150

The Renegade is the smallest Jeep ever. The boxy looks won’t appeal to all, but it offers class-leading off-road ability.

  • Jeep Renegade
  • For: Distinctive styling, efficient engines, excellent 4WD
  • Against: Interior quality, expensive top-spec variants
  • Verdict: A compact SUV with proper off-road ability

The Renegade is the smallest Jeep ever. The boxy looks won’t appeal to all, but it offers class-leading off-road ability.

Front-wheel-drive versions are available, although the Renegade works best as a full-fat 4×4.

The problem is, you’ll pay nearly £30,000 for the capable Limited 4WD – at least £10,000 more than the entry-level Renegade. At this price, the Jeep is fighting premium rivals and some cars from the class above.

There’s space inside for five people, while a 351-litre boot is about par for the segment.

If you like the exterior styling, you’re sure to appreciate the cabin design, even if the quality of the plastics is questionable.

Sport spec offers 16-inch alloys, five-inch touchscreen, cruise control, lane-departure warning and air conditioning. All other models get a superior 8.4-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, climate control, rear parking sensors and added safety systems.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine offers the best blend of torque and efficiency.
