DS 7 Crossback review

From £32,740

The DS brand has little equity, which makes the DS 7 SUV a tough sell in a premium segment in which image is everything.

  • DS 7 Crossback
  • For: Exterior styling, interior detailing, practicality
  • Against: Little brand equity, quality lags behind rivals
  • Verdict: Stylish SUV – but it can’t rival the premium players

To buy the DS 7 Crossback you need to take a leap of faith.

The DS brand has little equity, which makes the DS 7 a tough sell in a premium segment in which image is everything.

So why should you opt for the DS over a Mercedes-Benz GLA or Volvo XC40?

Subjectively, it looks great; the exterior styling stays just the right side of chintzy. It’s a similar story on the inside, with a cabin that’s loaded with neat details and dominated by a large 12-inch touchscreen.

It’s also practical, thanks to plenty of passenger space and a large boot.

Predictably for a French car, the ride is smooth and cosetting, but the overall quality isn’t quite up to the standards set by established players.

There are three trim levels: Performance Line, Prestige and Ultra Prestige. An E-Tense plug-in hybrid is also available, but costs just shy of £48,000. How brave do you feel?
