Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 revealed at the Nurburgring
© VWAhead of this weekend’s Nurburgring 24 Hours race, Volkswagen has unveiled the new Golf GTI Edition 50.
Created to mark the GTI’s 50th birthday in 2026, the commemorative model offers more than merely fancy alloy wheels and extra badges.
Instead, Volkswagen has built what might be the most formidable road-going Golf GTI to date, with handling that was honed on the fearsome Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit.
Read on for all the details about Volkswagen’s new Golf GTI Edition 50.

Looking to lead the pack
© VWVolkswagen’s choice of venue to reveal the Golf GTI Edition 50 is no coincidence. The Nurburgring 24 Hours is now the biggest single motorsport event in Germany.
More than 200,000 fans will flock to the Nurburgring circuit. They will have a chance to see the new Golf GTI Edition 50 and its racing counterparts on-track.
The Max Kruse Racing Volkswagen customer team has entered two Golf GTI Clubsport 24h cars in the race, running with numbers 19 and 76. Put them together and, of course, you get the original GTI’s debut year.

Five decades of Volkswagen hot hatch history
© VWEven though it was not the first hot hatchback, the Golf GTI Mk1 was instrumental in establishing the popularity of these compact performance cars.
More than 2.5 million examples of the Golf GTI have been built since 1976. Given GTI production was initially to be capped at 5,000 examples in total, that is quite an achievement.
The project was designed to homologate the Mk1 Golf for touring car racing, making for a neat link to the Golf GTI Edition 50’s Nurburgring debut.

The most powerful Golf GTI to date
© VWThe original Golf GTI came with a 1.6-litre engine producing a respectable output (by 1970s standards) of 110hp.
The new Golf GTI Edition 50 is a much hotter hatch. Its ‘EA888 evo4 LK3’ 2.0-litre engine generates 325hp, along with a thumping 310lb ft of torque.
This makes it the most powerful road-legal Golf GTI ever created, despite still being front-driven. An electronically controlled locking differential is fitted as standard.
-
A DSG gearbox only
© VWPark any ideas of a special Golf GTI with a manual transmission, as the Edition 50 will be offered solely with Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic ’box.
From a standing start, 0-62mph takes 5.5 seconds, making the GTI Edition 50 quicker by 0.1 seconds than the already-rapid GTI Clubsport.
In a 0-124mph shootout, the Edition 50’s extra horsepower makes a real difference, knocking 1.6 seconds off the Clubsport for a time of 16.8 seconds.
As for top speed, Volkswagen says that it will ‘probably’ be limited to 168mph – more than sufficient for a hot hatchback.
-
DCC suspension is standard
© VWAs a celebratory model, Volkswagen has pushed the boat out for the Golf GTI Edition 50’s specification.
It is the only Golf GTI with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) as standard, allowing the suspension to be tailored to the driver’s preference, or left to react automatically to changing road surfaces. Compared to a regular GTI, the Edition 50 sits 15mm closer to the ground.
The Edition 50 comes with 19-inch ‘Queenstown’ alloy wheels as standard. These feature a special red glazed finish, along with GTI-branded floating centre caps.
-
Already King of the ’Ring
© VWTo demonstrate the Golf GTI Edition 50’s ability, Volkswagen asked development driver and touring car ace Benny Leuchter to lap the Nordschleife.
Despite being affected by the Nurburgring’s challenging weather, Leuchter managed to set a lap time of seven minutes and 46.13 seconds.
This makes the GTI Edition 50 the fastest Volkswagen ever to lap the Nordschleife loop, beating the more powerful (and all-wheel-drive) Golf R by more than a second.
-
Optional GTI Performance Pack available
© VWTo get the full Nurburgring experience, Edition 50 customers have to opt for the GTI Performance Pack.
This adds new 19-inch ‘Waremanau’ forged wheels, which are fitted with semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza tyres. Each Bridgestone tyre saves 1.1kg, with the four forged wheels cutting another 12kg from the Edition 50’s kerb weight.
New pivot bearings for the front axle allow for harder spring rates, and the suspension is lowered by a further 5mm.
-
GTI Performance Pack brings the noise
© VWBringing even greater weight savings to the Golf GTI Edition 50 is a lightweight Akrapovic exhaust system, also included with the GTI Performance Pack.
Made from titanium, this helps remove a further 11kg from the car’s kerb weight, and creates a more aggressive exhaust note.
With its grippier tyres and lighter weight, the GTI Performance Pack turns the Edition 50 into a dedicated track warrior.
-
No winging it with the Edition 50
© VWVolkswagen has only made minor cosmetic exterior changes to the Edition 50, carrying over much of the bodykit found on the GTI Clubsport. The eagle-eyed will spot a special ‘GTI 50’ logo on the edge of the roof spoiler.
The roof is painted in gloss black, along with the side mirrors and rear diffuser. A colour gradient side stripe runs along the bottom of the doors, transitioning from gloss black to Tornado Red.
A horizontal red stripe runs along the radiator grille, plus there is an illuminated VW badge on the nose, located inside a darkened inlay.

The return of Tornado Red
© VWFive paint colours will be available for the Golf GTI Edition 50 – one of which will hold particular appeal for Volkswagen enthusiasts.
Tornado Red, first used on performance VW models in 1986, makes its return as one of the colour choices for the Edition 50. It seems almost rude to overlook this historic hue when ordering your anniversary GTI.
Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black metallic and Dark Moss green metallic (another exclusive colour) are available, too.

GTI nostalgia meets modern technology
© VWDespite the car’s added performance and ability, Volkswagen has resisted the urge to turn the GTI Edition 50 into a stripped-out track special. We suspect it can complete the school run as effectively as a lap of the Nurburgring.
A leather sports steering wheel features gear shift paddles for the DSG automatic transmission, with darkened aluminium trim and a neat ‘Edition 50’ badge included.
There are also red seatbelts, red and silver inserts for the aluminium pedals, ‘GTI 50’ floor mats and ‘Edition 50’ sill covers. As a finishing touch, owners will receive an exclusive GTI 50 key.

A reinterpretation of classic tartan seats
© VWTartan check seats have been a mainstay of the Golf GTI’s interior from the very beginning, and underwent a renaissance with the now-classic Mk5 model.
For the GTI Edition 50, Volkswagen has created a new take on tartan, combining it with bold green lines and synthetic velour inserts. GTI branding features on the seats for good measure.
It means that while there is no longer a golf ball-style gear knob, the GTI’s signature upholstery does live on.
-
The most advanced Golf GTI to date
© VWBeing based on the facelifted Mk8.5 version of the Volkswagen Golf, the GTI Edition 50 benefits from a revised infotainment system.
Sadly, Volkswagen has not brought back physical switches for the climate control, but it does have proper buttons on the steering wheel instead of touch-sensitive haptic ones.
The 10.2-inch digital instrument panel includes a choice of graphics, with the option to display turbocharger boost pressure and torque output. A GPS lap timer is included for use at track days.

Half a century of passion and performance
© VW“For 50 years, the GTI has stood for more than just performance, precision and driving pleasure at Volkswagen: it is a way of life that unites our fans all over the world – and an essential element of what makes us so strong as a brand,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen, at the launch of the Edition 50,
Schäfer added: “With the fastest and most powerful production model to date, we are celebrating half a century of GTI passion. One thing is for sure: GTI will naturally live on in the future – without any compromises.”
Volkswagen has yet to confirm UK prices for the Golf GTI Edition 50, or when it will be available to order. However, expect plenty of demand for this rather special anniversary gift.
