Skoda Scala review

From £17,265

The Skoda Scala is an underrated gem. It's roomy, well-priced and extremely practical. Sombre styling lets it down.

  • Skoda Scala
  • For: Ride comfort, price, practicality
  • Against: Sombre styling, not exciting to drive
  • Verdict: Another great value Skoda

The Skoda Scala is an underrated gem. There are just three trim levels, with the basic S priced at £17,265, rising to nearly £25,000 for the top-spec SE L.

The level of standard equipment is good, with the Scala S packing 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, air conditioning, 6.5-inch colour display and a DAB digital radio.

The engine line-up is similarly simple, comprising 1.0-litre and 1.5 turbocharged petrol engines and a 1.6 diesel. You can expect fuel economy between 41.5 and 57.7mpg, depending on the motor in question.

The Scala’s strongest attribute is the way it handles bumps. The ride quality is exceptional, with small wheels and soft suspension combining to deliver levels of comfort beyond this price-point.

Throw smart and inoffensive styling into the mix, along with a 467-litre boot and spacious cabin, and you have the makings of a very good family hatchback.
