BMW X2 review

From £30,910

The BMW X2 is the SUV for those who fancy paying more for a BMW X1 in fancier clothes, in exchange for less practicality.

  • BMW X2
  • For: Good to drive, interior quality, personalisation options
  • Against: The X1 makes more sense
  • Verdict: A more expensive, less practical version of the X1

The BMW X2 is the SUV for those who fancy paying more for a BMW X1 in exchange for less practicality.

Just don’t call it an SUV, because the Germans would rather you labelled it an ‘SAV’ – that’s (ahem) ‘Sports Activity Coupe’.

It shares much with the X1, right down to its range of petrol and diesel engines.

The trim levels are roughly the same, too, although the X2 gains an M Sport X model to make the most of its ‘sportier’ styling. It’s easier to spot, thanks to its grey wheelarch extensions.

There’s also a hot M35i version, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 306hp.

In truth, the X2 feels no racier to drive than the X1, while the hunkered-down looks are likely to prove divisive.

Some will like the large range of personalisation options, but the X1 remains a more sensible choice.
