Abarth 595 and 695 review

From £17,775

In isolation, there’s much to like about the Abarth 595 and 695. They look great and are fun to chuck about... but are also pricey and old.

  • Abarth 595
  • For: Styling, performance, soundtrack
  • Against: Cramped, impractical, expensive
  • Verdict: Great fun in small doses

Following the demise of the 124 Spider roadster, this is the only Abarth available in the UK.

As the styling suggests, the Abarth 595 is a hardcore, hot hatchback version of the Fiat 500, and there are many flavours to choose from.

In its basic form, the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine delivers a simmering 145hp, but up to 180hp is available from higher-spec 695 versions.

The range is topped by the 695 Anniversario and 695 Esseesse. Both come complete with a lightweight aluminium bonnet, adjustable rear spoiler and throaty Akrapovic exhaust – plus a price tag beyond £30,000.

In isolation, there’s a lot to love about the Abarth 595 and 695. They look great, are fun to chuck about, and the top-spec versions sound fantastic.

The problem is, the car is cramped inside, offers questionable ergonomics, and is rather expensive once you step up from the basic versions.

The Ford Fiesta ST and new Hyundai i20N cheaper, better to drive and easier to live with on a daily basis.
