Mercedes-Benz GLS review

From £77,110

If the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the best premium saloon in the world, the GLS must be the best premium SUV.

  • Mercedes-Benz GLS
  • For: Seven-seat practicality, luxurious, very comfortable
  • Against: Almost too big, expensive
  • Verdict: The GLS is the S-Class of the SUV world, with space for seven

If the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the best premium saloon in the world, the GLS must be the best premium SUV.

This is almost correct, although the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan take things up a notch or two, albeit for a significantly higher price.

The GLS also has the benefit of seven seats, which gives it the edge over the Bentayga in terms of practicality. It’s a majestic SUV that is arguably too big for Britain’s small and busy streets.

Prices start from £77,000 for the AMG Line Premium, rising to £91,500 for the Premium Plus Executive. Get a little trigger-happy with the options and you could be looking at a six-figure sum.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine develops 330hp, which is enough to propel the 2.5-tonne GLS to 62mph in just 6.3 seconds.

It’s also reasonably economical, with up to 32.8mpg achieved in official tests.
