BMW X6 review

From £62,410

The BMW X6 essentially a X5 with a little less practicality, coupe-like styling and a sportier flavour. Good to drive, but still divisive.

  • BMW X6
  • For: Less brash than before, great to drive, generous kit
  • Against: The X5 is better and cheaper, expensive options
  • Verdict: More subtle than before, but X5 remains the sensible choice

The BMW X6 has been reinvented. First launched in 2008, previous generations were – how can we put this? – a little too in-yer-face, with styling as unapologetically brash as some X6 drivers.

For 2019, BMW toned things down, with a look that’s far from elegant, but certainly less aggressive.

In common with earlier models, it’s essentially a BMW X5 with a little less practicality, coupe-like styling and a sportier flavour.

Prices start from £62,000 – which is a hefty sum – but there’s a generous level of standard equipment, along with a strong range of engines.

At £113,000, the flagship X6 M Competition sits alone as BMW’s priciest performance SUV, but the 530hp M50i is a more-than-adequate alternative. Meanwhile, the M50d diesel offers the low-down torque and efficiency you might demand from an SUV.

All X6 models are great to drive, but we’d still buy an X5.
