Volvo XC90 review

From £54,400

Few cars offer such a compelling blend of strong image, high quality, a relaxed driving experience and superb safety credentials.

  • Volvo XC90 2020
  • For: Comfort, quality, technology
  • Against: Fiddly infotainment, expensive options
  • Verdict: An effortlessly cool and sophisticated large SUV

The XC90 kickstarted the Volvo revolution back in 2014. It had a tough act to follow, but improved on the old model in every department, seeing off the Germans in the race to build the finest large SUV.

Its cabin is as relaxing as a hot bath, blessed with cosseting seats and a stylish, minimalist dashboard.

The list of standard equipment is too long for here; safe to say there’s no need to upgrade from Momentum to R-Design or Inscription trim.

All XC90s are powered by four-cylinder engines, with the B5 diesel accounting for the majority of UK sales.

Company car drivers might prefer the T8 plug-in hybrid, which emits 52g/km CO2 and attracts a benefit-in-kind tax rate of just 19 percent. With prices starting from around £55,000, this isn’t a cheap SUV.

However, few cars offer such a compelling blend of strong image, high quality, a relaxed driving experience and superb safety credentials.
