Lexus RX review

From £51,565

The Lexus RX takes on the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Volvo XC90.

  • Lexus RX
  • For: Build quality, technology, cabin
  • Against: Smallish boot, only one powertrain
  • Verdict: A luxury SUV that’s high on quality

The Lexus RX takes on the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Volvo XC90.

It’s the best-selling luxury SUV in the United States by some margin, although over here it’s overshadowed by its European rivals.

That means buyers are missing out on an incredibly satisfying large SUV, high on quality and tech. Standard specification includes 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, electric tailgate, 12.3-inch touchscreen, heated leather seats, wireless phone charger and a suite of safety assistance systems.

There’s only one powertrain available: a 3.5-litre V6 petrol-electric hybrid offering a combined output of 313hp. It glides away in near-silence in EV mode.

Most UK buyers opt for the F Sport, which offers a more engaging drive, but there’s no doubt the RX has been designed to waft. This is something it does very well.

The hybrid batteries rob it of some boot capacity, but the RX is practical enough for most families.
