Jaguar XF review

From £34,995

The Jaguar XF is a good car, and the driver's choice, but Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz provide very tough competition.

  • Jaguar XF
  • For: Styling, rear space, dynamics
  • Against: Rivals are more accomplished, update on the way
  • Verdict: Strong appeal – but wait for the facelift

If the success of the XE facelift is anything to go by, it’s worth waiting for the updated Jaguar XF in 2020.

Until then, it’s hard to make a case for a big saloon that’s been on sale for five years, especially given the strength of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

There are two models to choose from: XF saloon and XF Sportbrake estate. Prices start from £35,000, or an extra £2,500 if you want the added practicality of the wagon. There’s also a Chequered Flag edition, which features a host of cosmetic extras.

Elsewhere, there are numerous trim levels and options to choose from, including the flagship XF S. Power is sourced from a 3.0-litre V6 diesel developing 300hp.

A manual gearbox is available on some models, but we’d recommend the excellent eight-speed automatic.

The XF remains a good car, but we’d wait for the 2020 update.
