Jaguar XE review

From £29,635

The Jaguar XE has always been a highly credible alternative to the German saloons. Just not in the eyes of car buyers...

  • Jaguar XE
  • For: Styling, dynamics, interior quality
  • Against: Limited practicality, small range of engines
  • Verdict: A highly credible alternative to the Germans

Launched in 2015, the Jaguar XE has always been a highly credible alternative to the German saloons.

Unfortunately for Jaguar, many buyers prefer the perceived prestige of an SUV, leaving the XE playing second fiddle to the E-Pace and F-Pace in Jaguar showrooms.

That’s a shame, because following an update in 2019, the XE is better than ever. Interior quality is up a notch or two, the infotainment system is much improved, while a subtle tweak to the styling has given the car a fresh look.

Prices start from around £34,500 for the XE S, rising to £40,500 for the XE R-Dynamic HSE. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, a 10-inch touchscreen and electric leather seats.

All petrol and diesel engines are four-cylinder units, with the 2.0-litre D180 diesel the best option for motorway driving.

All versions are great to drive, but the XE is let down by cramped rear-seat accommodation and a small boot.
