Jaguar Land Rover to sue Chinese ‘copycat Evoque’ maker

Landwind X7Jaguar Land Rover is suing Chinese car brand Jiangling Motor for copying the design of its ultra-successful Range Rover Evoque reports Reuters, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter.

The Jiangling Landwind X7 is considered one of the more blatant copycat car designs and JLR believes it has a case for copyright infringement and unfair competition.

Range Rover Evoque

The Chinese model has been on sale for a few years now, despite its striking resemblance to the Range Rover Evoque. Reuters even says Landwind X7 owners can buy kits off the internet for less than £15, supplying the Range Rover grille and bonnet badging plus Land Rover badges to fully ‘Evoque-ise’ the Jiangling.

Bosses previously believed they wouldn’t be able to take action, with JLR CEO Dr Ralf Speth telling the media “there are no laws to protect us.

“We’ll have to take it as it is. In Europe, we can be protected against this kind of copy-paste in the design language; you can’t be protected in China.”

Now, it seems the firm has discovered a way to take action – despite the assumption being that overseas makers generally have little chance of winning cases against local firms.

Other car companies who have had their own designs infringed by Chinese brands will be watching the JLR copyright case with interest…

2016 Range Rover Evoque

2016 Range Rover Evoque prices to start at £30,200

2016 Range Rover EvoqueThe facelifted 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque will go on sale in September 2015 with prices starting from £30,200.

While the facelift is modest, restricted to new front bumper, revised headlights, tweaked tailgate spoiler and fresh alloy wheels, plenty more has been done beneath the surface.

Land Rover has introduced its all-new Ingenium turbodiesel engine to the Evoque; already seen in the Jaguar XE, the 2.0-litre engine replaces the current 2.2-litre turbodiesel.

It will be offered in two guises, 150hp eD4 front-wheel drive and 180hp TD4 four-wheel drive. The eD4 is so green, it becomes the most economical Land Rover ever, averaging 68mpg and emitting 109g/km in Coupe guise.

Super-economical eD4 models can be identified by blue Evoque badges on the bootlid.

Economy of the TD4 also improves; it can now average up to 59mpg. Service intervals are stretched too, and the lightweight Ingenium engine also reduces NOx emissions. Land Rover will also offer a single petrol engine, the 2.0-litre turbo Si4, although this 240hp motor can only average 36mpg.

InControl inside

Inside, infotainment receives a big upgrade with the introduction of Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl system. With an eight-inch touchscreen and far clearer graphics, it has smartphone-style swipe capability and links to smartphones to offer apps access.

InControl Touch is standard on SE and SE Tech models; an upgraded InControl Touch Plus is standard on HSE Dynamic and Autobiography models.

The range starts at £30,200 for the eD4 2WD 5-door; added standard spec over today’s cars includes lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, heated front seats, folding door mirrors, climate control plus automatic headlights and wipers.

A new option is a gesture-controlled power tailgate: open it by swinging a leg under the rear bumper. There are two new colours as well – Baltoro Ice and Waitomo Grey.
