Top Gear's Vauxhall Astra

The Top Gear Vauxhall Astra has sold on eBay for what is a reasonably high price – but the good news is it’s all for charity.

The POWERRRRR Red Vauxhall Astra – which featured as Top Gear’s reasonably-priced car – was driven by the likes of singer Olly Murs, actor Aaron Paul and funnyman Jimmy Carr.

After a bidding frenzy involving 27 different eBayers, the virtual hammer came down at a price of £17,800, far more than you’d expect to pay for a 1.6-litre Vauxhall Astra of 2013 vintage. But then this is no ordinary Astra.

The Vauxhall Astra was the final car to be used for the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car feature and it followed the likes of the Suzuki Liana, Chevrolet Lacetti and Kia Cee-apostrophe-dee. It’s unclear whether or not the feature will return for the new series of Top Gear, set to be hosted by Chris Evans.

The Astra Tech Line – which has covered 2,908 tough miles – has been sold to raise money for automotive industry charity BEN. The airbags have been disabled to make room for the roll cage, with the eBay ad stating it is not type-approved for use on public roads.

Given the ‘significant cost’ of converting it back to road use, we suspect the Astra will be used for promotional or display purposes. Top Gear challenge cars have been on display at the Beaulieu Motor Museum.

The number of bids – 67 in total – highlights the ongoing appeal of Top Gear, as to the untrained eye this is little more than a regular Vauxhall Astra. In fact, between £8,000 and £10,000 should secure you a very similar Astra that you can actually drive on public roads. You’ll just have to pretend Will Smith and Rachel Riley perched their bottoms on the driver’s seat.

But don’t worry if you missed out, you can buy the new seventh generation Vauxhall Astra from £15,295. It’s a far better car than the old model and you’ll even get to play with the really-rather-good OnStar personal onboard assistant.

Just don’t ask the operator for the quickest line through Gambon or whether you should lift off through the Follow Through.
