Jenson Button was 'close' to getting job as Top Gear presenter

Chris Evans has revealed that he nearly poached Jenson Button to present Top Gear – but McLaren boss Ron Dennis wanted him to race for another season.

On this morning’s Radio 2 breakfast show, Evans ended an interview with Button asking cheekily: “When will we know this season, as opposed to last season, if you’re definitely available to host Top Gear next year?”

Button laughed nervously and joshed, “I knew that was coming… I don’t know.”

Evans added: “We were close though, weren’t we? I think that helped you out with your McLaren deal. But that’s something we’ll talk about off the air.”

Last week, Chris Evans revealed the full line-up for the new series of Top Gear on his Radio 2 show.

Earlier in the interview, Button revealed that he was spending the day at McLaren’s Woking HQ “making sure his brum-brum car was working.”

The F1 driver is set to make an appearance at the London Classic Car Show this evening.
