Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been voted 2014 International Engine of the Year by a panel of 85 automotive journalists – making it the third time in a row it’s been deemed best engine in the world.
Now powering 10 Ford UK cars, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost also scooped the ‘Best Engine Under 1.0-litre’ trophy, again for the third time running.
On the way, it beat the cream of engines from both premium and supercar brands – firms such as Ferrari had to make do with class prizes, not the overall honours…
The prizes mean the engine has now won 13 awards since launch three years ago – notably, including the Dewar Trophy from the Royal Automobile Club, plus a Ward’s 10 Best Engines trophy in the US. This is the first time a three-cylinder engine has won one of the noted American prizes.
Ford 1.0-litre EcoBoost: 72 countries, 140hp – for now…
Available in 72 countries worldwide, Ford’s recently again defied logic with a 140hp version of the little motor, joining the existing 100hp and 125hp versions. It’s even been tuned up to 200hp in a Formula Ford EcoBoost race concept, suggesting even 140hp may not be its road car limit…
The new 140hp Fiesta 1.0-litre EcoBoost perfectly demonstrates the on-paper value of downsizing: the can hit 0-62mph in 9.0 seconds, reach 125mph, yet average 62.9mpg and emit 104g/km CO2.
“The success of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has simply snowballed,” said Barb Samardzich, chief operating officer, Ford of Europe.
“Since launch we have now extended availability through the range of Ford vehicles and through markets worldwide to set a new global benchmark in powertrain engineering that delivers a direct benefit to customers – both in terms of fuel efficiency and performance.”
“The 1.0-litre EcoBoost was created as a radical smaller-displacement engine to meet the biggest automotive challenge in the world – no compromise refinement, performance and great fuel economy,” said Andrew Fraser, manager, Gasoline Calibration, Ford of Europe.
“The secret to EcoBoost success is a range of innovative technologies that deliver big car benefits from a small engine.”
