F1-at-Silverstone-Classic-5F1 fans waking up this morning with a sudden desire to attend the British Grand Prix at Silverstone are in luck – tickets remain available on the gate, BRDC president Derek Warwick has revealed to MR.

Speaking at the annual BRDC media BBQ, he said that officials have made sure those who turn up on the day will still be able to get in, even if they haven’t preordered a ticket.

Officially, the 50th Silverstone Grand Prix is a sellout but this number includes the additional on-gate tickets. And some people do still do turn up on the day to take advantage, he explained – particularly if there’s been a shock result in qualifying which raises the possibility of a compelling race.

Yesterday, we had such a surprise. Although Mercedes-AMG driver Nico Rosberg took pole, British star Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth place after curiously deciding to abandon his final lap out on the circuit: this would likely have been his fastest lap. It raises the tantalising prospect of a determined Hamilton fightback.

The Ferraris are also well down, lining up 19th and 20th, while British-based Ferrari-powered Marussia lines up a shock 12th and 13th (with Brit Max Chilton lining up behind Ferrari protege Jules Bianchi). McLaren driver Jenson Button also answered boss Ron Dennis’ criticism of him in fine style by placing third on the grid, behind World Champion Sebastian Vettel.

‘We’ll sort them out’

While it’s great to know people can still drive to Silverstone today and get into the Grand Prix, what happens if lots of people do the same, MR chairman Peter Burgess asked Warwick. Not a problem, he said.

“We’ll sort them out – they won’t be disappointed…”

Just make sure you take enough cash with you: ticket prices start at £150, with grandstand seats costing £250. Given the action today’s race has in store though, many will consider that good value.

Are you inspired enough to head over to Silverstone today and pay on the gate to see what could be a race of the year? If so, let us know how you get on…
