Hyundai has revealed a first surprise sketch of its new i20 Coupe – suggesting the three-door version of the new i20 may be set to build upon the firm’s growing motorsport involvement with a racy-looking Ford Puma-style hot coupe brand-builder.
Hyundai says the new i20 Coupe will “combine driving fun, a distinctive character and sporty refinement,” and will feature both a more sharply raked roofline and a bigger rear spoiler.
Engineering a bespoke roof indicates bodywork changes to the i20 Coupe could be quite far-reaching: the teaser sketch suggests a very bold rear end with dramatically flared wheelarches, sculpted rear bumper and a shallow wraparound tailgate beneath the aggressive roof spoiler.
Big and bespoke rear lights also add to the drama.
Hyundai hasn’t confirmed any more details about the i20 Coupe, and not revealed when it will be launched. It seems likely, however that we’ll see the racy coupe in concept guise alongside the regular production-ready i20 5dr at the Paris Motor Show next month.
What do you think, then – is Hyundai preparing us for ‘the new Ford Puma’? Is it planning to use its recent WRC success to build a motorsport image with the European-designed, engineered and built i20 Coupe? Share your thoughts with us…
