Toyota GT86 review

From £29,005

The GT86 costs around half the price of a new Toyota Supra, but it doesn’t deliver half the thrills. It’s far better than that.

  • Toyota GT86
  • For: Handling, steering, equipment
  • Against: Engine needs to be worked, cabin quality
  • Verdict: Terrific rear-wheel-drive car offers fun at an affordable price

Ignore those people who tell you the Toyota GT86 is too slow.

While it’s true the 2+2 coupe could handle more power, there’s a dynamic delicacy here that’s sadly absent from today’s breed of super-powerful hot hatches.

In the real world, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine delivers the right amount of go for Britain’s roads, while superb steering and handling arguably give the GT86 the edge over any front- or four-wheel-drive rival.

It’s a car for enthusiasts – the more you put in, the more you get out. On the minus side, the interior felt low-rent in 2012, so it’s really showing its age in 2020.

Also, the engine isn’t particularly efficient, a problem not helped by the fact that it needs to be worked hard.

The GT86 costs around half the price of a new Toyota Supra, but it doesn’t deliver half the thrills. It’s far better than that.
