Smart EQ Fortwo review

From £17,550

The Smart Fortwo has gone all-electric. It represents a last hurrah for the diminutive city car, with all petrol engines ditched in favour of an electric future.

  • Smart Fortwo
  • For: Cool cabin, fun to drive, great in the city
  • Against: Expensive, limited range
  • Verdict: Good EVs come in small packages, but this one is very compromised

The Smart Fortwo has gone all-electric. It represents a last hurrah for the diminutive city car, with all petrol engines ditched in favour of an electric future.

Come 2022, production will be moved to China as the fruits of the Daimler and Geely partnership begin to bear fruit.

In truth, the new Fortwo looks much like the old one – new LED headlights and a larger grille are the biggest tweaks.

Its 17.6kWh battery delivers up to 70 miles of range on a full charge, which isn’t a lot, but is arguably enough for a car of this size and nature.

For an EV, the EQ Fortwo is a relative featherweight, which makes it feel quite sprightly on the road. It’s great fun to chuck about, while its tiny dimensions make city driving (and parking) a doddle.

The interior is funky, but the Smart now feels a little outmoded.
