Renault Megane review

From £21,495

In common with other models in its range, Renault has pushed the Megane closer to its premium rivals in the family hatchback segment.

  • Renault Megane
  • For: Styling, practicality, equipment
  • Against: Only the RS models are fun to drive, cramped in rear
  • Verdict: Excellent range of practical and efficient family cars, plus a terrific hot hatch

In common with other models in its range, Renault has pushed the Megane closer to its premium rivals in the family hatchback segment.

Launched in 2016 and updated in 2018, the current Megane boasts stand-out styling, a large boot and efficient engines.

There are three models: hatchback, estate (Sport Tourer) and RS. Prices start from just over £18,000, with the Sport Tourer adding around £1,500 on top. The RS hot hatch range stretches all the way to the track-focused £51,500 Trophy-R.

The mainstream line-up has been simplified to Play, Iconic and GT Line models, with even the entry-level Megane boasting a long list of equipment.

There are two core engines: a 140hp 1.3-litre petrol and 115hp 1.5 diesel. The RS utilises a 1.7-litre turbo engine  developing between 280 and 300hp.

Overall, the Megane is an impressive family car that should be cheap to run.
