Kia Sportage review

From £21,010

The Sportage is one of the UK’s best-selling family SUVs, beaten only by the Nissan Qashqai. Competitive PCP deals and a strong warranty both help.

  • Kia Sportage
  • For: Generous specification, good value, long warranty
  • Against: Dull styling, not great to drive, uninspiring cabin
  • Verdict: Arguably the best value SUV you can buy

The Sportage is one of the UK’s best-selling family SUVs, beaten only by the Nissan Qashqai. Competitive PCP deals and a strong warranty both help here.

Launched in 2016, the current model lacks the sparkle of the Peugeot 3008, both in terms of exterior styling and interior quality.

On the plus side, even the entry-level Sportage 1 features seven-inch touchscreen infotainment, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, cruise control and a reversing camera.

The engine range was updated in 2018, with buyers able to select from 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines, plus a 2.0 diesel with mild-hybrid technology. Two- and four-wheel-drive variants are available, although opting for four driven wheels leaves a dent in fuel economy.

If efficiency is your thing, opt for the 1.6 diesel, as you’re likely to see around 50mpg. The Kia isn’t the most exciting SUV, but it’s unlikely to give you any trouble.

For many buyers, that’s just the ticket.
