Hyundai Nexo review

From £69,495

The Nexo is significant, not least because it was built from the ground up to run on hydrogen, rather than being based on existing architecture.

  • Hyundai Nexo
  • For: Driving range, quick to refuel, specification
  • Against: Limited infrastructure, expensive
  • Verdict: Could be a vision of a hydrogen-fuelled future

The Nexo could be the car of the future.

While electric vehicles hug the limelight, companies such as Hyundai and Toyota are investing heavily in hydrogen. The Nexo is significant, not least because it was built from the ground up to run on hydrogen, rather than being based on existing architecture.

Unlike the Toyota Mirai, the Nexo has an SUV body style, allowing it to tap into one of the most popular market segments. Not that many of us will be using a Nexo for the commute to work.

For a start, the infrastructure isn’t there. Right now, there are around a dozen hydrogen filling stations in the UK, so it’s not as easy as popping to your local petrol station.

On the plus side, it takes just five minutes to refuel, which then provides up to 414 miles of driving range.

This gives the Hyundai an edge over electric cars. It costs almost £70,000, but the Nexo is still one to watch.
