Hyundai Kona review

From £18,250

The Hyundai Kona has a cramped cabin but this doesn’t detract from a likeable and well-executed compact crossover.

  • Hyundai Kona
  • For: Bold styling, electric and hybrid versions
  • Against: Cramped in rear, can get expensive
  • Verdict: One of the best compact crossovers

The clever Kona is available with petrol, diesel, hybrid and all-electric power.

However, while prices start from around £18,500 for the entry-level Kona S with a 1.0-litre petrol engine, you’ll pay at least twice that for the Kona Electric, which offers up to 279 miles of range from its 64kWh battery.

The Kona Hybrid sits somewhere in the middle and uses a 1.6-litre petrol-electric powertrain to deliver CO2 emissions from just 90g/km.

Styling is subjective, but there’s no denying the Kona cuts a distinctive figure.

Standard kit includes air conditioning, 16-inch alloy wheels and cruise control, but upgrading to SE or Play trim adds a seven-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and larger wheels.

The inside can’t match the drama of the exterior styling, but the Kona has a quality cabin. Space in the rear could be better and the 330-litre boot is merely average for this class of car.

Yet this doesn’t detract from a likeable and well-executed compact crossover.
