Fiat 500L review

From £18,030

Alas, the 500L is far from cool, but the choice of compact MPVs is shrinking as buyers turn to fashionable crossovers.

  • Fiat 500L
  • For: Practicality, finance options, equipment
  • Against: Styling, cabin quality, feeling old
  • Verdict: It’s practically good, but lacks charm

‘Growing up is cool,’ claims Fiat, as it tries desperately to give the 500L some street cred.

Alas, the 500L is far from cool, but the choice of compact MPVs is shrinking as buyers turn to fashionable crossovers.

There’s room for five adults to sit in comfort and the boot holds a generous 400 litres. If that’s not enough, the stretched 500L MPW boasts a 638-litre boot and the option of two extra seats.

It’s just a shame interior quality can’t match the practicality. It was below par in 2012 – today it’s becoming inexcusable.

The range has been simplified to include a basic Urban edition, SUV-inspired City Cross and Cross models, plus a well-equipped 120th Anniversary special. Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, a seven-inch touchscreen, air conditioning and cruise control.

There’s only one engine: a 95hp 1.4-litre petrol. Good visibility, light steering and a high driving position make city driving a doddle, but the Fiat feels out of its comfort zone on a B-road.
