BMW Z4 review

From £38,745

There’s something refreshingly honest about the BMW Z4. In a world of hybrids, SUVs and niches within niches, the Z4 is a straightforward sports car.

  • BMW Z4
  • For: Performance, practicality, build quality
  • Against: More cruiser than ultimate driving machine
  • Verdict: Striking roadster that’s fast, practical and well made

There’s something refreshingly honest about the BMW Z4.

In a world of hybrids, SUVs and niches within niches, the Z4 is a straightforward sports car. Petrol engine up front, room for two in the middle, and drive directed to the rear wheels.

It shares a platform with the Toyota Supra, but feels less focused. It’s also heavier than the likes of the Porsche 718 Boxster and Alpine A110, making it less precise and agile.

Not that this really matters. Even the entry-level 2.0 turbocharged engine delivers a decent amount of power, while the 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit in the M40i has the soundtrack to match.

In flagship guise, the Z4 will hit 62mph in just 4.5 seconds. The other time of note is 10 seconds, which is how long it takes the roof to open or close.

Build quality is excellent and practicality is surprisingly good.
