BMW X1 review

• For: Handling, safety, cabin quality
• Against: Expensive to buy, costly options
• Verdict: The X1 offers a compelling blend of dynamics, efficiency and safety

Not to be confused with the original and rather lacklustre BMW X1, the current car is one of the most desirable in its class.

This is BMW’s entry-level SUV, more practical than the similarly-sized X2 and with prices starting from just under £29,000.

So it’s not cheap, but the X1 offers class-leading dynamics, a rock-solid image and a quality-rich interior. In common with the majority of compact SUVs, there’s little off-road ability, but we suspect few buyers will care.

There are two petrol and two diesel engines available, all of which offer a terrific blend of performance, refinement and efficiency.

There are also four trim levels: SE, Sport, xLine and M Sport. It gets rather expensive at the top end, while some of the must-have options add a significant chunk to the showroom price.

Still, as a safe and sporty small SUV, the BMW X1 is hard to beat.
